DESCRIPTION

The Boulder County Attorney’s Office has an opening for an Assistant County Attorney II or Assistant County Attorney III


Attorneys in the County Attorney’s Office work on complicated and often cutting-edge legal issues for a progressive local government while enjoying excellent work-life balance.  The County Attorney’s Office provides legal services to Boulder County and its elected officials in a wide variety of areas. The duties for the position include providing legal advice to County elected officials, department heads, and staff in multiple areas.

 
The Boulder County’s attorney’s office focuses on hiring attorneys who can provide meaningful contributions to our office and the County’s work.  Because we aim to hire adaptable attorneys with the ability and potential to learn new areas and because we are in the process of conducting an internal assessment to move around some duties within our office, we have not yet determined the exact duties of this position.

 
The duties of this position will include some but not all of the following depending on the needs of the office and the background, experience, and interests of the attorney:   open space acquisitions and operations; real estate; for an attorney with experience and dedication to equity issues, the County’s diversity, equity, and inclusion work; budget, finance, bonds, TABOR, and related issues; zoning enforcement; Colorado Open Records Act; transportation issues, and public health.

 
To qualify for the position, applicants must have a law degree and a minimum of two years of experience as a practicing attorney and be currently licensed to practice law in Colorado. Five years of experience will be necessary to qualify for the Attorney III position.


A strong candidate will have thorough knowledge and skill in statutory interpretation, legal research, and legal analysis; strong organizational and writing skills; good judgment; a dedication to public service and the ability to develop strong relationships with clients, courts and co-workers; and a background in Colorado local government law.

This is a full-time and benefited position. The work schedule is Monday - Friday and work hours are determined by need but generally fall between 7:30am - 5:30pm.  The office location is in the Downtown Courthouse, located at 1325 Pearl St., Boulder, CO 80302. This is currently a hybrid position with the option of working from home up to three days per week.  This position will be required to attend in-person meetings at other Boulder County locations as necessary. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is exempt (not eligible for overtime).


Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

Assistant County Attorney II:

       Classification Salary Range: $99,000 to $142,584

       Hiring Salary Range: $99,000 to $120,792 

 

Assistant County Attorney III:

       Classification Salary Range: $109,140 to $157,140

       Hiring Salary Range: $109,140 to $133,140


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 


  • LLB or JD degree and licensed to practice law in Colorado. 

  • Assistant County II- A minimum of two years’ experience as a practicing attorney. Prior law clerk experience or additional related education may count toward minimum experience requirements. 

  • Assistant County III- A minimum of five years’ experience as a practicing attorney. Prior law clerk experience or additional related education may count toward minimum experience requirements. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Experience with government budgeting law, TABOR, bonds, accounting, budgeting, and grants 

  • Experience with Colorado local government law

  • Experience advising on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including equal protection and Title VII issues 

  • Experience with open records issues

  • Experience in code enforcement or litigation

  • Experience training and assisting clients in drafting scopes of work for contracts
