The Laborer position(s) is responsible for the performance of a wide variety of routine manual duties as assigned by the Physical Plant. The work is performed in accordance with well-established, unvarying operating procedures in use in the department or municipality where employed, and involves the performance of a wide variety of diverse and sometimes unrelated manual duties requiring physical endurance and a willingness to perform arduous tasks. Direct supervision is received from a higher-ranking employee or working supervisor, who exercises continual control over work assigned and performed and who periodically monitors work being done to insure that it is being done properly and in accordance with instructions.
There are 4 total summer temporary positions for Laborer available. The positions will be assigned beginning May 13th through August 23, 2024.

Essential Functions
- Assists in patching and grading streets and roads
- Rakes, shovels and tamps asphalt
- Loads and unloads trucks with materials, supplies, tools, equipment, etc.
- Assists in excavation and backfills for construction and repairs
- Collects garbage and rubbish, and separates recyclables
- Works on refuse collection route by emptying cans in truck and/or loading debris
- Assists in the treatment of roadways with oil and stone
- Performs unskilled work in connection with the painting and maintenance of signs and performs painting chores not requiring the services of a journeyman painter
- Digs and refills trenches for water and sewer pipe lines and assists in the laying and connection of pipe
- Cleans and flushes streets, culverts, and catch basins, and clears blocked-up sewers
- Assists in the repair of sewers, catch basins, hydrants, mains and services
- Cuts grass, trims shrubs, rakes leaves, cuts brush, spades flower beds, and otherwise assists in a variety of grounds maintenance activities
- Assists with planting of trees, shrubs and flowers
- Cleans boilers and assists in their operation and maintenance
- Washes walls and windows and performs a variety of heavy building cleaning tasks
- Assists a Building Maintenance Mechanic or Maintenance Person in a variety of repair tasks, and may independently perform routine minor repair tasks
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of the use of basic simple hand tools and equipment used in the work such as shovels, picks, brooms, hammers, etc.; ability to follow simple oral instructions; ability to lift heavy weights; willingness to perform routine manual work; willingness to work outdoors under all weather conditions; physical endurance; sobriety; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications
There are no minimum qualifications for these positions of Laborer.
Preferred Qualification: Experience in heavy manual labor is desirable.
