Job Summary: NCTLM seeks a detail-oriented individual with scientific aptitude for an entry-level position to support our microbiology and chemistry teams, which conduct routine quality control testing in cannabis flower, concentrates and a wide variety of cannabis-infused products. This position requires working during an afternoon/evening shift, approximately 2 – 10 PM weekdays, and requires ability to work at least one weekend day per month. Primary responsibilities involve weighing and preparing samples for analysis using aseptic technique. Responsibilities will expand to include PCR analysis, operation of analytical instrumentation, and results interpretation as the successful candidate will receive training in these operations.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Perform microbial analysis on customer samples. Standard compliance tests include enumeration of total coliforms and total yeast and mold and qualitative screening for Aspergillus, Salmonella
and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Additional tests may be performed at customer request.
- Assist in sample preparation for other analytical tests in the lab as needed.
- Follow laboratory SOPs and adhere to all applicable quality assurance policies.
- Assist Lead Microbiologist and Scientific Director to conduct R&D and related method development and validation experiments.
- Work in a fast-paced, production lab environment with variable sample volume which requires flexibility in your schedule to consistently meet turn-around time requirements.
- Ensure all work is performed and documented properly and in compliance with internal procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Use the laboratory’s Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to report results obtained from various analyses.
Job Requirements
- Ability to work afternoon/evening shifts (approximately 2 to 10 PM) is required.
- Flexibility to work up to one weekend day shift per month is required.
Required Qualifications
- An Associate degree in biology, chemistry, laboratory technology or a related field.
- Must be proficient with use of Microsoft Office software (Teams, Excel, etc.)
- Basic knowledge of microbiology as it relates to bacteria, yeasts and molds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of various microbial analytical techniques including plate count methods and qPCR.
- Prior experience working in the regulated cannabis industry is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in principles and application of aseptic techniques.
