What You'll Do:

• Oversee enterprise safety and emergency management policies.
• Develop, review, revise, and maintain Laboratory Safety policies.
• Understand, advise staff, and ensure compliance with CAP/CLIA, NYS, OSHA, FDA, and DOT regulations with regard to safety.
• Monitor the use and disposal of chemicals and biohazardous materials from all lab areas per state and federal guidelines and coordinate with external vendors for hazardous waste disposal.
• Manage and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all labs and ensure all SDS binders are complete and up to date.
• Manage incident and event reporting for any safety incidents or events.
• Establish and enforce appropriate PPE protocols for laboratory staff.
• Provide training and ensure all lab staff have completed safety training and are current on their annual quizzes and/or updates to safety protocols.
• Have knowledge of emergency response procedures for fires, spills, exposures, and forces of nature.
• Ensure safety equipment is maintained according to requirements (eye wash, fire extinguishers, showers, first aid kits, etc.).
• Complete and document monthly safety audits to address issues within the laboratory.
• Conduct and oversee new-hire Laboratory Safety training and annual fire safety training for content and completeness.
• Prepare for and participate in laboratory audits and meet with Quality and Management teams as needed.
• Write policies and procedures to meet safety code compliance for the lab.
• Assess ergonomic risk and provide solutions to lab and workstation ergonomics.
• Oversee accident investigation process and work with laboratory management to determine corrective/preventative actions in response to workplace injuries.
• Serve as chair of the safety committee.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, chemistry, biology, or closely related scientific field.
• At least 5 years of experience in an EHS-related role is desired.
• Knowledge of state and federal safety regulations for work environment and personnel
• Excellent communication skills
• Thrives in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to work independently as well as with others to plan and carry out projects
• Ability to travel on a monthly basis
• Self-driven and works well in an interdisciplinary team with minimal direction
