Required Education and Experience: High school diploma required along previous phlebotomy experience.
Preferred Education and Experience: A minimum of two years experience as a phlebotomist, Laboratory Assistant, or Laboratory Specimen Processor to include phlebotomy performed on all ages and ability to adapt to multiple computer systems.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications: Basic knowledge of medical terminology and data entry skills. Knowledge of specimen collection, specimen requirements, specimen integrity and specimen handling.
Summary/Objective: A Lead Laboratory Assistant performs the roles of phlebotomy, specimen processing, point of care testing, provides training, and maintains inventory for the department.

- Phlebotomy skills are such that specimens are obtained correctly and specimen integrity is maintained. Responsible for training new employees to ensure phlebotomy competency and training documentation is complete.
- Verifies accurate and correct information on patients and proceeds to accurate labeling of specimens
- Accurate data entry skills in verifying correct patient information, requested tests, and specimen accessioning information into the LIS
- Professional attitude with patients including assistance with patients’ questions and giving instructions on specimen collection and handling
- Processes specimens to achieve maximum accuracy, efficiency, and productivity. Performs point of care testing and demonstrates accurate test result reporting.
- Tracks and maintains records and reports and provides complete and full documentation of any problem or resolution of a problem
- Performs accurate and reproducible results of WAIVED testing as ordered by the physician producing results in a timely manner
- Performs quality control on WAIVED testing and maintains records in the appropriate log
- Participates in Proficiency Testing programs for WAIVED testing
- Responds to questions by physicians and other clinical staff in a timely manner
- Uses available reference materials and telephone support to assure the appropriate handling of tests of an unusual nature
- Maintains a well-stocked, clean, and orderly work environment. Responsible for reviewing inventory and determining supply order to ensure adequacy.
