Job Summary: The Lab Supervisor is responsible for providing direct oversite of laboratory staff in the pre-analytic specimen processing. This role is also responsible for performing the duties of Histotechnician per the Laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Schedule: 2nd Shift (10am-6pm or 12pm-8pm) and 3rd Shift (5pm-1am); Main shift will be 10am-6pm however flexibility to assist during all business needs is required.
Responsibilities:
- Provide direct oversight of the 2nd and 3rd shift laboratory staff.
- Facilitates team processes by working in collaboration with team members to ensure that task priorities, goals and achievements are completed and coordination with management.
- Responsible for all aspects of operation in the histology area including preparation and maintenance of records, reports, analysis of testing methodologies, training, instrumentation, and compliance.
- Planning of day-to-day workload by setting the work pace, coordinating work assignments, identifying, and solving problems and defining appropriate completion times.
- Distributes and balances workloads and tasks (including both Histotechs and Lab aides) among employees in accordance with established workflow, skill level and/or occupational specialties, adjusting the workload in accordance with established priorities to ensure timely accomplishments of assigned team tasks and ensuring that each employee has an integral role in developing the final team product.
- Supply inventory management.
- Scheduling coverage for subsections within the work unit, adjusting their schedule in lieu of techs on day and annual leave as needed.
- Supervising and communicating with shifts and handling customer service at any time – 24/7 (even if not physically in the laboratory).
- Creating and maintaining policies and procedures if any changes are required.
- Coordinating with the laboratory courier service and resolving any issues or emergencies that arise with specimen pick-ups.
- Troubleshooting IT, IT interface and equipment.
- Coordinating with reference laboratories and troubleshooting issues.
- Embed skin specimens such as shaves, punches, nails, and excisions.
- Perform microtomy on histology blocks.
- Stain and coverslip hematoxylin and eosin slides.
- Perform special stain techniques such as, but not limited to, PAS, AFB and Gram stain.
- Perform immunohistochemistry stains on the Bond Max and the Ventana Ultra.
- Cut control slides for IHC and special stains.
- Assist with slide distribution if needed.
- File paraffin blocks and H/E slides in accordance with procedures
- Operate and maintain tissue processors.
- Trouble-shoot lab equipment and ensure proper routine maintenance.
- Maintain laboratory inventory and supplies.
- Perform validations on new lot to lot, new antibodies, and new tests.
- Ensure quality control procedures are followed and appropriate documentation is maintained.
- Monitor inventory and ensure proper reagent documentation techniques.
- Biohazard and hazardous waste disposal in accordance with policy and regulations
- Maintain a safe, clean work environment.
- Observe blood-borne pathogens policy and proper personal protective equipment.
- Adhere to all company and laboratory specific SOPs and complete quality control (QC) logs as required on a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual basis (per individual SOPs).
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor on an as needed basis.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED minimum required; Associate Degree preferred
- 2 years of equivalent experience required.
- ASCP certification or eligibility preferred.
- NYS histotechnician license or equivalent.
- Knowledge of laboratory inspection such as NYSDOH, CLIA or CAP
- Knowledge of programming and operation of general laboratory and automated IHC equipment.
- Research skills
- Tasks require attention to detail.
- Advanced computer skills.
- Mechanical ability and knowledge of biology, immunology, anatomy, and chemistry.
- Interpersonal/human relations skills
- Ability to operate personal computer & maintain records.
- Ability to approach problems/decisions analytically.
- Ability to use microscope/cryostat, tissue processors, and stainers.
- Ability/willingness to adhere to the established departmental service standards.
