Supplemental to that role, the Staff Interpreter supports the appointed DRC staff member with coordination of presentations and my support campus-wide interpreting services when schedule allows.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Interprets/transliterates for Deaf staff member when engaging with students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, staff, and campus visitors. Settings include but not limited to: office hours, student/faculty meetings to discuss accommodation, college sponsored events, department team and all staff meetings.
  • Required to work flexible hours: including evenings and weekends.
  • Develops and/or compiles training manuals/training aids and technical sign materials in preparation for presentations or other assignments.
  • Performs independent needs assessment regarding cultural and language variables to determine the most appropriate interpreting methods and strategies to employ.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and supportive relationships while performing assigned duties.
  • Follows and maintains strict confidentiality in all interactions following RID Code of Ethics standards.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited American Sign Language interpreting program and two years of experience in interpreting at the postsecondary level
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Possession of a national certification of interpreting from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, or Board for Evaluation of Interpreter (BEI)
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience withvarious methods of expressive and voice interpreting/transliterating.
  • Experience with ethical standards setforth by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Incorporated.
  • Experience with standard practices ininterpreting/transliterating at the postsecondary level.
  • Experience with cultural aspects ofdeafness and cross-cultural mediation.
  • Experience in managing highlytechnical, fast paced assignments where decision making time is at a minimum.
  • Experience with communicatingeffectively orally and in writing.
