The Court Translator provides translations of written documents from Spanish to English and English to Spanish for all the Pima County Superior Court divisions and departments as needed. Produces Spanish to English and English to Spanish translations of court forms, orders, notices, petitions, conditions, reports, letters, and other vital court documents and information to ensure meaningful language access for the Limited English Proficient clients of the court.
Researches and consults legal and specialized terminology and phraseology pertinent to the assigned projects to find appropriate legal equivalents that preserve the meaning contained in the source texts.
Assists in the understanding and preservation of the nuances in the source texts through research and in-depth knowledge of the English and Spanish languages.
Will work as a final editor in the revision, editing, proofreading, standardization, and finalization of translations prepared by other translators.
Use translation memory software, and other translation tools and word-processing tools, produces grammatically correct, well-written, and accurate final versions of translated texts.
Finalizes translations according to set standards regarding order, clarity, register, style, consistency, and terminology.
Assists in keeping records and maintaining a database of documents as they are translated and evaluated.
Prioritizes work to meet deadlines.
Additional Responsibilities/Duties:
  • May perform administrative functions as needed.
  • May be required to assist with general interpretation needs outside of the courtroom if needed.
  • Must adhere to the Judicial Employee Code of Conduct and the Interpreter's Code of Professional Conduct; the court's Language Access Plan, Policies and Procedures, as well as standards and expectations for the provision of meaningful language access services.
  • May be required to attend outside professional development workshops, institutes, or training programs.
  • May be required to work on weekends and overtime.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Additional Requirements: Must possess or be able to acquire the relevant legal knowledge within a few months of employment so that translations reflect correct word choices and legal expressions in the target language without obscuring or changing meaning.
Writing - Communicating effectively with others in writing as required by the needs of the reader/target audience.
Information gathering and researching - Knowing how to find information and identifying essential information in appropriate and reliable sources.
Must have skills to build an accurate translation memory for the court to help automate the court's translation process.
Must possess solid knowledge of the linguistic conventions and norms (e.g. grammar, syntax, punctuation, spelling, etc.) of the English and the Spanish languages.
The skill level in both the English and the Spanish languages must be that of a professional translator including an excellent command of regionalisms and idiomatic expressions.
Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and Spanish.
Possess knowledge of the specialized terminology used in judicial proceedings.
Possess ample knowledge of different registers, synonyms, colloquialisms, and idiomatic expressions to adapt writing to a specific target audience.
Demonstrates willingness to engage in active learning such as working with new materials and information to grasp its implications.
Demonstrates combining competence and experience to successfully produce fully accurate and reliable translations of texts ranging from simple to complex -not simply conveying content and register but also capturing, to the greatest extent possible, all nuances intended in the source document.
Demonstrates congruity of judgment and the ability to apply translation methodology.
Demonstrates high proficiency and organizational skills demonstrated by exploring and finding ways to structure or classify multiple pieces of information.
Demonstrates great ability to multitask in a fast-paced work environment.
Demonstrates excellent software skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Translation Memory Software, Computer Assisted Translation Tools, Internet Research).
Demonstrates great ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in translation, linguistics, or a closely related field and two (2) years of paid professional translation experience in the English/Spanish languages; preferably in the legal field, or any equivalent combination of education and experience as approved by Human Resources.
Examples of the Combined education and experience qualifications are:
A master's degree or second-year candidate for the master's degree in translation; or
An associate's degree and four (4) years of paid professional translating experience in the English/Spanish ; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional requirement is successful completion of the Division's Translation Screening Exercise designed to measure the applicant's translation skills and knowledge.
Preference may be given to candidates who completed a translation/interpretation internship with the court.None at this time. Preference may be given to candidates with a translator's certification from the American Translators Association (ATA).Employment Type: Full Time
