Job Summary
Under general supervision, provides sign language interpretation and other support services to NCOESC students with hearing impairments. Facilitates communication among students who are hearing impaired, their peers, the classroom teacher, and other school/campus staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate's degree and successful completion of interpreter preparation program.
- Valid Ohio Department of Education license
- Knowledge of subject areas to be interpreted or an ability to locate resources to become familiar with content material
- Knowledge of child development and language development, especially as it relates to students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Proficiency in spoken and written English and one or more of the following visual modes of communication used by students: American Sign Language, Contact Sign Language, Signed English, Manually Coded English, Signing Exact English, Cued Language, Oral Transliteration
- Ability to multi-task and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with high levels of quality and accuracy.
- Ability to effectively communicate and present information to NCOESC administration, staff, parents, and other stakeholders.
- Appointment may require successful completion of communicable disease, child abuse, CPR, first aide, CPI and/or behavioral management training or other training as needed
- The employee shall remain free of alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the ESC
- Proficiency with use of technology hardware and basic software (i.e., Microsoft office), email, and office equipment (i.e., copier, fax, scanner, telephone, etc.). Proficiency with web-based applications (i.e., Google Docs, ODE website, social media, etc.), and NCOESC databases
- Ability to preserve confidentiality of student information and records
Clearances
Criminal justice fingerprint/background (FBI/BCI), and public health clearances.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
The performance of this job requires constant standing, talking, hearing, engagement in repetitive motions and hand/eye/foot coordination. This job requires frequent walking, sitting, and feeling. This job requires occasional crouching.
Performance of primary duties takes place in a school environment with exposure to adverse environmental conditions including frequent noise and temperature changes. Frequent light physical effort required.
