Shift: First shift
Spoken Language Interpreter, Full- Time, First Shift, Arabic with another potential regional language.
UC Health is hiring a full-time Arabic (with another potential regional language) Spoken Language Interpreter for the First Shift at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
The Spoken Language Interpreter will provide interpreting, transliterating, and translation services, as needed for Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and staff throughout the University Hospital. The Interpreter will adhere to an exemplary code of ethics at all times, including the highest regard for patient confidentiality.

Responsibilities
  • Engages in population appropriate communication. Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks. Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient. Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems. Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately. Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms.
  • Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect. P
  • Provide interpreting/transliterating services to patients, family, support persons and employees to ensure appropriate access to information in a timely manner within the organization. Provide the communication link between consumers and medical personnel via interpreting services. Communicate accurately and concisely without personal bias between patients, staff and health care providers. Assist the healthcare team in problem solving / complaint resolution as relates to the limited English proficient population. Ensure patient rights and equal access to care. Utilize both internal and external resources in a cost effective manner. Provide related services in support of direct interpreting functions to ensure patient needs are met; i.e. notary services, assistance with financial applications; facilitate appointment scheduling; explain hospital policies; ensure access and referral to hospital services. Provide required equipment to patients as needed, i.e. TTY, light signalers, CCTV, etc.
  • Initiate and develop positive relationships with patients, visitors, health care providers, fellow interpreters and staff, exhibiting respect, flexibility and cooperation at all times. Serve as cultural broker providing cultural awareness relating to the Non-English speaking community. Provide in-service training for medical and hospital staff in response to identified needs or areas for improvement. Supervise/mentor practicum students. Provide information to staff concerning ADA, section 504 of the rehabilitation act, and Title VI requirements for language access services. Strive to meet or exceed the expectations of patients, visitors and other staff members in the spirit of quality and excellence.
  • Document accurate and complete information pertinent to patient, i.e. specific patient care needs, patient's refusal for interpreting services, or when communication has not taken place. Utilize computer systems effectively including appropriate use of intranet and Internet. Provide accurate and complete summary of each interpretation session on Patient Log. Maintain accurate records for reporting productivity, work volumes and statistics via database entry. Identify and record referrals from GroupWise TUHInterpreters@healthall.com.
  • Take responsibility to facilitate improvements in hospital systems. Seek professional development in accordance with professional medical interpreting standards. Actively participate in staff meetings and mandatory in-services. Compliant with hospital and department standards of performance, conduct, policies/procedures, and interpreter code of ethics. Assist in other departmental functions as needed.

Qualifications
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Associate Degree in Interpreting, Interpreter Training Program graduate, combination of education.
  • Spoken Language Interpreter: Must hold a certificate of completion (or be able to receive it within 6 months) substantiating formal training and qualifications for medical interpreting in accordance with current professional Spoken Language medical interpreter community standards.
  • Prefer computer experience with a working knowledge of database entry and use of electronic spreadsheets.
