Job Description:
AMA is currently accepting applications for multiple summer positions associated with Entry Systems work conducted at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA. Work will be in support of the Thermal Protection Materials branch, part of the Entry Systems and Technology Division at NASA Ames.
The successful candidate will work on a short term (10 weeks; from early-June until mid-August 2024) modeling project in a research topic of relevance to the Entry Systems division. The applicant will be expected to support projects in one or more areas of research such as: material response modeling, microscale modeling and computational materials. The exact projects will be assigned based upon the skillset of the successful applicants and project need areas. The salary range for this position will be $20.50-$28.00 per hour and is commensurate with experience and education.
Responsibilities:
- Responsibilities will vary based on the project area assigned to the candidate. Responsibilities will include:
- Perform research on assigned topic for period of 10 weeks.
- Regular reporting (verbal and/or written) to research mentor on progress of project.
- Present final results to division at completion of project.
Requirements:
- Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited university are highly preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills are required.
- Progress toward a degree (undergraduate or graduate) in technical areas of relevance to Entry Systems.
- US citizenship or permanent US residency is preferred and may be a requirement for some of the positions.
- In any case, only candidates currently authorized to work in the US will be accepted (no visa sponsorship or applicants from abroad). No applicants from NASA's designated country list.
- Some positions may require on-site presence at NASA Ames Research Center and therefore temporary relocation may be necessary (in which case on-site lodging will be provided at no additional cost).
Desired Skills (varies depending on the project):
- Strong coding/programming background, in particular C and Python.
- Experience with NASA codes such as PuMA, PATO, Icarus.
- Experience with material response modeling, microscale modeling or atomistic simulations.
- Experience with Machine and/or Deep Learning techniques.
- Familiarity with high-performance computing and large-scale simulations.
