Job Description
An Industrial Designer is a creative professional who designs products that are functional, aesthetic, and user-friendly. Industrial designers work with engineers, marketers, and manufacturers to create products that meet the needs and preferences of the customers. They may also work on the branding and marketing of the products they design.
Responsibilities
- Consult with clients to determine requirements for designs.
- Research the various ways a product might be used, and who will use it.
- Sketch ideas or create renderings, which are images on paper or on a computer that provide a visual of design ideas.
- Use computer software to develop virtual models of different designs.
- Create physical prototypes of their designs.
- Examine materials and manufacturing requirements to determine production costs.
- Work with other specialists, such as mechanical engineers and manufacturers, to evaluate whether their design concepts will fill needs at a reasonable cost.
- Evaluate product safety, appearance, and function to determine if a design is practical.
- Present designs and demonstrate prototypes to clients for approval.
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in industrial design, engineering, or a related field
- A portfolio of previous design projects
- Proficiency in computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software and computer-aided industrial design (CAID) software
- Knowledge of industry-specific modeling software, such as Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Alias, Siemens NX, or Rhino
- Knowledge of design principles, such as color, shape, form, balance, and proportion
- Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and engineering concepts
- Creativity and originality
- Problem-solving and analytical skills
- Communication and presentation skills
- Collaboration and teamwork skills
- Market research and customer feedback skills
