HDR is currently in need of a Hydraulic Structural Engineer to work as a member of our Water Business Group within the Dams, Levees, and Civil Works Team in Florida. This individual will be a member of the multidisciplinary, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi Water team and perform Structural Engineering for local and national dams, levees, and civil works projects as well as performing Structural Engineering for other water infrastructure projects. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct structural analyses, evaluations and designs; develop design options or recommendations with supporting calculations for various structure types such as floodwalls, dams, water control structures, water conveyance structures, hydraulic gates, floodgates, spillways, retaining walls, sheet pile walls, cofferdams, foundations, and drainage structures.
  • Review structural documents and coordinate design with all disciplines.
  • Develop design plans, sections and details as part of multidisciplinary design teams for civil works projects. Conduct design development and contract document work sessions in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines.
  • Perform engineering assignments that may require critical thinking and creativity to address unique design elements that have limited engineering manual or code-based guidance.
  • Write and edit specifications, select procedures, materials and their respective sizes, and complete necessary calculations for various structure types.
  • Independently coordinate the work of the structural design team through the design development and contract document phases of a project.
  • Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance and comment resolution.
  • Assist with condition assessment for various hydraulic structures.
  • Provide Structural Engineering services during construction including construction observation, inspections, submittal and RFI reviews, and ITC responses.
  • Work closely with our Dams Levee and Civil Works and Hydropower teams to develop scopes of work, budget estimates and implement project analysis work plans.
  • Assist in development of design criteria, report preparation, and quality assurance and control reviews of related designs.
  • Coordinate with the project leads to implement measures to successfully meet all project goals and objectives.
  • Mentor and coach other engineering and support staff, including mentoring of junior engineers, and provision of quality assurance review or input where required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Structural or Civil Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years of structural design and analysis experience 
  • A professional engineering license is required
  • Knowledge of construction document preparation including drawings, specifications and cost estimates
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills 
  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office, Excel, Word and relevant structural analysis and design software such as, AutoCAD, Revit,MicroStation, MathCAD, Risa 3D, MATLAB, Staad Pro, LS-DYNA, TrueGrid, and/or SAP2000
  •  Ability to handle multiple assignments is expected. 
  • Must be willing to travel throughout the United States on an as-needed basis
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Educational and/or work experience in the field of hydraulic structures and large civil works infrastructure for water management and/or energy production.
  • Previous structural inspection, and FERC Part 12, or FHWA Bridge Inspection Certifications also a plus. 
  • Potential for becoming rope access trained, confined space entry, OSHA, or other safety training for inspections.
  • Knowledge of USACE design and construction procedures and policies, dam safety assurance policy and guidance, and FERC Dam Safety background a plus.
  • Experience with navigation structures and large hydraulic gates (including experience with fiber/polymer materials) is a plus.
  • Construction administration and observation experience is a plus.
  • Good leadership and organizational skills preferred.
