Human Resource Manager
Job Summary: The Human Resource Manager at Ecology Project International (EPI), plays a pivotal role in shaping the organization's human resource practices ensuring that they align with our mission, vision, and values. EPI is dedicated to conserving and protecting the planet's biodiversity by empowering local communities through education and hands-on engagement. Accountability: The Human Resources Manager reports to the Finance & Administration Director.
Pay Grade: E (Manager Level)
Primary Responsibilities:
Human Resources Operations

  • Employee Record Management: Maintain accurate employee records, utilizing systems like BambooHR, to ensure up-to-date and organized personnel information.
  • Policy Management: Keep employee policies, procedures, forms, and handbooks current, staying informed about policy trends and suggesting changes as needed to align with best practices.
  • Training and Communication: Train both managers and employees in the effective use of HR tools, while partnering with management to effectively communicate HR policies, procedures, programs, and legal requirements.
  • Data Analysis and Solutions: Analyze HR trends and metrics to develop innovative solutions, programs, policies, and procedures that enhance the overall HR operations and support organizational goals.
  • Compliance and Legal Adherence: Ensure compliance with international, federal, state, and local laws by maintaining accurate and up-to-date job descriptions, completing necessary paperwork for external agencies, handling severance calculations, investigating and resolving employee conflicts, and ensuring employment practices align with regulations.

Talent Acquisition, Management, and Retention
  • Enriching Onboarding and Staff Integration: Lead the staff onboarding process, including sourcing, interviewing, and hiring. Coordinate new hire orientations and collaborate with Program Managers and Finance Supervisor for seamless onboarding.
  • Benefits Management and Employee Support: Administer and communicate employee benefits programs, providing assistance and guidance to staff regarding benefits.
  • Retention Analysis and Recommendations: Regularly analyze turnover, trends, and factors influencing retention, summarize findings and make recommendations to enhance retention.
  • Compensation Strategy and Implementation: Assist the Finance Director in the annual review, preparation, and implementation of the organization's compensation program, contributing to the alignment of compensation practices with organizational goals.
  • Exit Management: Oversee exit interviews, ensuring proper closeout activities are conducted, property is collected, and necessary documentation is completed.

Organizational Development and Culture - Board and Staff
  • Board of Directors Relationship Management: Maintain the Board of Directors handbook and files, schedules quarterly board meetings, coordinates travel logistics, and manages board retreat planning. Participates in committee meetings, records minutes, and serves as an HR Committee member and staff liaison to the board.
  • Policy Guidance: Provide HR policy guidance and interpretation to external groups like HR committees, firms, and consultants. Manage onboarding processes for new board members, including systems training.
  • Employee Recognition and Engagement: Supervise employee recognition programs and events, suggesting changes when needed.
  • Staff Development and Events: Organize and lead annual staff retreats, collaborating with the Director of Communications and Culture to facilitate team-building and professional development opportunities.
  • Employee Development and Relations: Assist supervisors in implementing rewards and appreciation programs, identifies training needs, and facilitates executive coaching. Manage 90-day plans and annual reviews, develops personal development plans, and collaborates to enhance work relationships, morale, and productivity.
  • Workplace Culture Enhancement: Take a proactive role in enhancing workplace culture, promoting inclusivity, engagement, and productivity. Leads Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training and development initiatives.

Location
The Human Resources Manager is a full-time, year-round position based in EPI's office in Missoula, Montana.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5+ years prior Human Resource experience
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

Preferred:
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in written and verbal communication
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize projects as necessary
  • Knowledge of compensation strategy, performance management, employee relations, safety practices and talent acquisition, and the ability to apply this in a manner that is compliant with relevant employment law
  • Experience with creating a culture of engagement, collaboration and teamwork
  • Capable of compiling and analyzing employment data to guide strategic planning
  • High degree of organization and attention to detail
  • Confident out-going, well-spoken, creative, and persistent
  • Experience working in education, travel or non-profit industries
  • Ability to travel and work in various sites for a minimum of one month per year
