Read on!As part of our Landscape Division in the Parks Department, you will be responsible for supervising and participating in the grounds care and installation of landscaping on municipal properties. Generally, your schedule will be Monday - Friday from 7 am to 3:30.As a Horticultural Specialist your duties and responsibilities will include: Performs and supervises horticulture practices related to the cultivation of flowers, shrubs, trees and turf, including pruning, planting, fertilization, integrated pest management, and irrigation. Prepares and maintains municipal grounds through the planting and cultivation of flowers, trees, shrubs and turf to provide aesthetically pleasing landscapes throughout the City. Participates in the design, and supervises the installation and maintenance of landscape beds. Assists and performs in greenhouse operations and landscape plant production. Identifies diseases and insects; implements an integrated pest management program. Identifies plant nutrition disorders and develops an agronomical sound nutrition program. Assesses, operates, schedules, and services irrigation systems. Assists in training staff. Enforces safety policies and procedures. Operates assigned vehicles, equipment and hand and power tools. Assists and supervises the work of seasonal and temporary employees, and volunteers. Assists in the preparation for festivals and special events. Required to work irregular hours. Assists in snow removal Provides input on budget for upcoming projects, existing maintenance and equipment. Performs related duties.The ideal candidate for this position would possess the following credentials: A degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, or a degree that can be applied toward success in growing plants and caring for grounds. A minimum of three years experience successfully growing plants in an all-inclusive grounds care program. Experience identifying landscape plants with a knowledge of cultural care. A minimum of three years experience with plant nutrition, pest identification, and pest control. Experience coordinating and managing a small crew.
