The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department (PRCR) mission states: "Together we connect and enrich our community through exceptional experiences."
PRCR plays a leading role in the quality of life and character of the Capital City providing a wide range of facilities, amenities, and programs spread over 220 parks and 120 miles of greenway that support the social, cultural, mental, and physical well-being of citizens. The Parks Department is committed to building a great workforce and is guided by the vision of Bringing People to Parks and Parks to People.
The City of Raleigh is seeking a dedicated Natural Resources and Horticulture Specialist who will work within a maintenance team to manage park grounds in the City of Raleigh. This position operates in both natural and horticulturally extensive areas within a 35-property park district over 200 acres in Central/West Raleigh. Many are high-profile, ornamental landscapes intended to beautify, inspire, and provide exceptional experiences for the people of Raleigh. Other focuses include monitoring and maintenance of both natural and created ecosystems with a sensitivity to native systems and management of invasive species. The preferred candidate will have a high skill level and substantial experience in plant identification, garden maintenance, and planting design. They will have the leadership and organizational abilities to direct others to assist in landscape projects and implement new initiatives with civic groups, volunteers, and other City departments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ability to design, install, and efficiently maintain annuals, perennials, tropicals, trees, and shrubs.
  • Exercise experience with turf maintenance including fertilization, herbicide, and appropriate cultural practices.
  • Soil preparation, fertility management, herbicide applications using selective, post- and pre-emergent herbicides, weeding, pruning, mulching, and watering.
  • Execute invasive species removals and restoration plantings.
  • Perform familiarity with basic landscape equipment, including trucks and trailers, mowers, and small equipment.
  • Be organized, keeps good records, completes assigned work orders, and is self-motivated.
  • Ability to work independently or as a part of a team.
  • Organize and lead volunteer groups, and advise garden clubs, civic groups, and individual citizens on gardening subjects.
  • This position will assist the City in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED and four years of related experience.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing/Certifications

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
  • North Carolina Public Operator Pesticide License in Turf & Ornamental or ability to obtain within 45 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Horticulture degree, landscape management degree, or four-year degree in relevant field.

ADA and Other Requirements
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
