Job description

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is a part of New Shepard, a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Kármán line - the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.
We are looking for a skilled, motivated engineer, to help us build large scale test systems that enables human spaceflight as part of the NS HIL (hardware-in-the-loop) team. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention toward safe and repeatable human spaceflight. This is an individual contributor position open to be filled in our Kent, WA location.
We value people who are ready to learn new things, beginning on the first day. We're looking for a teammate who will be committed, careful, and passionate about ensuring safe and reliable human spaceflight. We are a growing team and seek technical, initiative taking, motivated engineers who desire to help us grow.
Responsibilities:

  • Support of existing HIL platforms through the life of the New Shepard vehicles, including block upgrades and end of life updates.
  • Design and develop solutions to electrically simulate sensor and actuator components used on New Shepard vehicles, including hydraulic actuators, motor controllers, solenoids, LVDTs, GPS antennas, PTs, TCs, RTDs, etc.
  • Design HIL harnessing and hardware interfaces required to integrate simulated components with flight hardware.
  • Design and develop hardware simulators for vehicle components such as batteries, cameras, serial devices, CAN devices, etc.
  • Design and develop fault injection solutions for sensors, actuators, communications busses, and other hardware components.
  • Design, develop, and complete multi-domain integrated system tests in the HIL to support flight software qualification and operator training.
  • Support the integration of flight avionics hardware, EGSE, operator consoles and analysis tooling necessary to verify the requirements of avionics units under test and test equipment.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!
Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree or higher in electrical engineering or related discipline.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proven history of integrating software and hardware systems.
  • Solid electrical engineering, digital and analog circuit fundamentals and lab skills.
  • Proficient in the use of standard electronic lab test and troubleshooting equipment.
  • Digital and analog circuit design, simulation, assembly, and test, with knowledge of design principles for non-laboratory environments.
  • Preference for and ability to thrive as a member of a tightly integrated team.
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree or higher in electrical engineering or related subject area.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience working in hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) or system integration labs (SIL).
  • Experience in analog to digital and digital to analog converters, power supply components and design, analog testing/troubleshooting techniques, and signal integrity, layout and grounding principles.
  • Applied experience with real time operating systems and embedded systems.
  • Broad understanding of instrumentation, interfaces and sensors including DMMs, DAQ, Power Supplies, Oscilloscopes, DIO, GPIB, Serial-422, UDP, GigE, SPI, switch technologies and topologies, accelerometers, RTDs, thermocouples, and 4-20mA sensors.
  • Understanding of metrology, sources of measurement error, and uncertainty analysis.
  • Exposure to hardware-in-the-loop environments outside of aerospace (automotive, robotics, medical, etc.).
  • Experience with a Unix-like operating system (Linux, BSD, etc.) command-line interface and shell scripting.
  • Experience with programming in Python and/or C/C++.

Special Mentions
  • Relocation provided.
  • Travel not expected for this role but possible.
