The role:
Join our crew in Juntura as a Highway Maintenance Specialist where you will perform manual labor and operate equipment to maintain, repair and reconstruct our roadways, freeways, bridges and more! In this role you will help keep Oregon’s roads safe for all travelers. Apply today!

The majority of the work performed by the person in this position will be performed in the Eastern Oregon Border Economic Region.

A day in the life:
  • Perform manual labor and operation of a variety of heavy and light equipment including motor graders, heavy tractors and dozers, heavy and light trucks, snowplows, deicer trucks, road sweepers, asphalt or concrete mixing plants, sand blasters, belly dumps, backhoes and more.
  • Perform minor surface repairs including hand pothole and concrete patching and small inlay work.
  • Patch large sections of highways, remove slides and build or repair roadway shoulders and bike paths.
  • Perform snow removal and provide emergency response.
  • Apply pesticide and herbicide sprays on vegetation along roadways.
  • Clear brush, mow grass and pick up debris alongside the road.
  • Maintain and repair fences, metal guardrails, concrete barriers and more.
  • Exposure to noise, extreme heights, adverse weather, heavy equipment, pesticides and hazardous waste materials is expected.
  • Must be able to move around rough terrain, on uneven slopes and may need to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • May need to be available after hours, on weekends and holidays for emergency, on call and weather related purposes.

Minimum qualifications:
One year of experience performing basic Highway Maintenance work;
OR
Two years of general landscaping, maintenance, mechanical, farming, logging, and/or construction experience or training.
Special qualifications:
  • Employee will be required to use a commercial motor vehicle to conduct business. You must possess a current, valid commercial driver's license A (CDL-A) with a tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, no 5th wheel restrictions and no manual transmission restrictions, OR have the ability to acquire a class A commercial learner permit within 60 days of hire and a CDL-A with a tanker endorsement and restrictions removed within six months of hire (ODOT will cover training costs) to be considered eligible for this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks, including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse registration and full query check for our final candidate(s) and annual query for current employees.
  • This position requires living in state housing at the Juntura maintenance station. If no on-site housing is available, this position requires a maximum 30 minute response time to 5825 4th St.,Juntura, OR 97911 emergency call-outs.

  • Experience working in a team environment and taking part in team and safety meetings.
  • Proven ability to read and understand policies and procedures and apply them to your work.
  • Experience with Highway Maintenance or construction.
  • Snow removal experience using snow blowers, snow plows, sanding or deicing.
  • Experience using hand tools, chainsaws and heavy equipment such as tractors, excavators, loaders or dump trucks.

  • The salary range for this position will be truncated as of April 1, 2024, which will impact the minimum salary for this classification. The new monthly salary range on April 1, 2024, will be $3,948-$5,483.
