JOB TITLE: Highway Engineering Technician Intern (Seasonal)
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
STATUS: Seasonal
JOB OBJECTIVES:
A Seasonal Highway Engineering Technicianassists the Public Works Director/Engineer and performs additional tasks as assigned by the Assistant Public Works Director and staff to assist in the development and completion of complex Public Works Projects. Provides field and office civil engineering work. Performs duties that include, but are not limited to assisting with such tasks as materials testing, surveying, and inspection.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties listed are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of those specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
  • Perform construction duties by assisting with inspection, surveying, staking, and materials testing.
  • Work with other divisions within Public Works to provide engineering support.
  • Completion of inspection reports and quantity computations as instructed for contract administration construction management. Makes sketches, and maintains maps.
  • Perform utility locations under the Gopher State One Call system.
  • Utilizes various machines and equipment in the delivery of services, such as computers, calculators, air testers, mechanical shakers, metal detectors, drafting equipment, hammers, shovels, and tape.
  • Operates survey equipment including Trimble GPS, Robotic Total Station, and level on preliminary and construction surveys.
  • Process as instructed, various reports and documents, including production reports, billing invoices, lab reports, contractor wage reports, hydraulic reports, bridge plans, daily construction diary, weekly construction reports; daily plant reports, spot check reports, pile driving reports, and test pile reports.
  • Perform office duties, such as scanning & filing documents.
  • Reliable, predictable attendance and punctuality.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AT HIRE:
Education
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Licenses and Other Requirements:
Valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License required.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Qualities at Hire:
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; basic arithmetic; determine percentages; determine time and weight, perform calculations involving variables, formulas square roots, and polynomials; perform statistical calculations; and interpret same as appropriate.

PREFERRED / DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Currently enrolled in a program to acquire a Technical College diploma or Associates Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or related field.
Experience
Surveying, material testing, computer-aided drafting in the civil engineering field.

  • Ability to communicate with people to convey or exchange professional information.
  • Ability to interact with people (staff, general public, elected officials) beyond giving and/or receiving instructions.
  • Ability to produce reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas, basic arithmetic, determine percentages, determine time and weight, perform calculations involving variables, formulas, square roots, and polynomials, perform statistical calculations,
  • Ability to use very complex and difficult computer design programs such as Civil 3D, GPS software, One-Office, etc.
  • Knowledge of local, State, and Federal standards, manuals, and specifications for the design.
  • Ability to read a variety of professional, technical, and administrative documentation, directions, instructions, methods, and procedures.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Public Building/Outdoors.
HOURS
This position generally works Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3;30 p.m. however, extended shifts, and weekend work will be required due to special needs or reassignment of workloads.
Physical Demands can involve, but are not limited to:
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including computer, calculator, air tester, mechanical shakers, metal detectors, drafting equipment, hammers, shovels, and tape. Must be able to move or carry job-related objects or materials up to 50 pounds. Must be physically capable of stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, and balancing for the purpose of performing inspection of culverts, bridges, road ditches, etc. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for medium active work.
