Summary This position is located within the Grounds Section of the Facilities Management Service Line at the VA Medical Center in Bath, NY and is responsible to repair and overhaul all Heavy Mobile Equipment to maintain a consistent snow removal and ground restoration throughout the year. Responsibilities The major duties include but are not limited to: Dismantles, overhauls, rebuilds, reassembles and adjusts brakes, clutches, transmissions, and differentials, including the replacement of any badly worn or broken parts to the Station's tractors, road equipment, grounds equipment, fire trucks, power lawn mowers, generators, pumps and other equipment powered by internal combustion engines, gas or diesel, including snowplowing equipment; Dissembles, inspects, repairs and adjusts wheel bearings, shock absorbers, steering mechanisms and wheel alignments; Performs compression, ignition and carburetor repairs; Tests and repairs starters, generators, wiring, etc.; Performs limited amounts of welding and soldering; Performs complete engine overhaul jobs as required; Operates a drill press, air compressors, electrical testing apparatus, small generators and snowplowing equipment; Performs the duties of an automotive mechanic and works on or assists with repairs to any of the station's VA Owned vehicles and equipment; Performs limited amounts of mechanical work, other than automotive, as conditions require; Assists with grass mowing, driving and snow removal during those periods when needed; and, Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Requirements of the job description requires that the individual have no physical limitations in that 85 percent of the duties require moderate to strenuous physical effort in making overhead repairs when the vehicle or equipment is on a lift and where parts are worked on in hard to reach places that require him/her to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, crouch, kneel, as well as laying down to work in tiring uncomfortable positions Heavy muscular effort is involved lifting, pulling and/or pushing heavy parts and components weighing up to 100lbs. Must have dexterity of foot, hand and mind at all times. For the most part the incumbent's time is spent inside. Incumbent must frequently stand for long periods of time on hard surfaces. He/She will be exposed to some danger from carbon monoxide fumes and very noisy conditions, where dirt, dust, grease and other hazardous fluids that may cause irritation or burns to the skin exist. He/She is exposed to dangers that may cause cuts, bruises, abrasions, shocks, burns, and strains. At times, the incumbent will have to work outside and be exposed to inclement weather conditions to include rain, snow, freezing conditions and extreme high temperatures while making repairs operating vehicles or equipment. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
