Summer School Locations: Cedar Creek Elementary, Highland Park Elementary, Meadow Lane Elementary, Richardson Elementary, Sunset Valley Elementary, Trailridge Elementary

Purpose Statement
The job of Licensed Practical Nurse was established for the purpose/s of providing direct nursing care activities to students with special health care needs providing an economical and efficient way of meeting both educational and health care needs within an assigned classroom with specific responsibility for working with students one-on-one; following educational, health care plan/services and documenting students' daily activities; and modeling appropriate behaviors and interactions with student and staff.
EssentialFunctions

  • Administers medication and specialized procedures to the identified student(s) (e.g. catheterization, suctioning, tube feeding, etc.) for the purpose of providing directed health care services.
  • Communicates with teachers and a variety of health care professionals (e.g. District Registered Nurse, Speech Therapist, PTs, COTAs, etc.) for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP and Health Care Plan objectives.
  • Documents student's daily activities (e.g. behavior, health care services, use of special equipment, on/off task times, etc.) for the purpose of completing daily logs and student's hourly activities.
  • Implements under the supervision of an assigned teacher and Registered Nurse, plans designed by IEP team for students with special health conditions as well as the Health Care Plan for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
  • Maintains special equipment for the purpose of providing assistance as required by the student.
  • Models conversation, manners, clean up activities, listening, and everyday interactions for the purpose of demonstrating appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Monitors and documents students' daily activities as related to health issues (e.g. class schedule, toileting, medication, appetite, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Provides instructional assistance (e.g. math, science, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc.) for the purpose of implementing IEP goals; and ensuring students success.
  • Remains with a student at all times for the purpose of providing for the safety of the student.
  • Reports daily health conditions of the student(s) for the purpose of informing the supervising Registered Nurse and parents if directed to do so.
  • Responds to emergency situations or health emergencies for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: age-appropriate activities when working with high-risk youth; and concepts of grammar and punctuation.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data, and consider a number of factors when using the equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes, and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data, and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem-solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem-solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines, and problem-solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; and working with frequent interruptions.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. The utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization's services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard-free environment.
