SELECTION PROCEDURES
This is a Promotional and Open recruitment to establish an eligibility list and fill vacancies. The eligibility list will be used to fill permanent vacancies which may occur during the life of the eligibility list. In a promotional and open recruitment, the promotional list shall take precedence. When the promotional list contains fewer than three eligible and willing employees, certification of additional ranks shall then be made from the open list.
Positions in this classification are full-time (40 hours per week), 12 months per year.
The recruitment process will consist of a performance examination and an oral technical interview, which is tentatively scheduled during the weeks of January15-26, 2024. Qualified applicants will be notified by email.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, safely and effectively operate a variety of landscape maintenance and construction equipment.
FUNCTION & DUTIES
Operate gang, flail and rotary mowers, rototiller, backhoe, turf vacuum, dump truck, edger, skip loader, seeder, aerifier, renovator, sod cutter, spreader, chainsaw, hedge trimmer and a variety of other equipment used in maintaining, renovating and establishing landscaped areas. E
Inspect and service equipment to assure safe and efficient operation of equipment; check, adjust, lubricate and clean equipment. E
Maintain equipment logs for record. E
Operate skip loader/backhoe to level fields, establish project areas (includes digging/excavating), create ball diamonds, grade tracks, pick up trash, rocks, debris, and dirt and load trucks for transport. E
Discuss project needs and equipment concerns with Department leadership. E
Report safety issues that may affect students and staff with Department leadership and/or appropriate District administrators. E
Perform grounds maintenance duties as directed including marking and preparing athletic tracks and fields, cleaning refuse pit and other special projects. E
Evaluate and adjust irrigation systems as required, which may include minor repairs. E
Install, inspect and repair playground equipment and surfacing. E
Must demonstrate attendance sufficient to complete the duties of the position as required. E
Observe assigned work areas for maintenance needs and vandalism and notify appropriate personnel as necessary.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Fundamentals of ornamental horticulture such as soil types, pH and NPK.
Operation, use and routine maintenance of grounds power equipment.
Methods, supplies and tools used in caring for landscaped areas.
Potential hazards of operating Grounds Equipment around students and staff; appropriate safeguards and other health and safety regulations.
Various turf types and principles of grading and drainage.
Legal and defensive driving practices.
ABILITY TO:
Operate gang, flail and rotary mowers, rototiller, turf vacuum, skip loader, backhoe, bobcat, dump truck and a variety of other equipment used in mowing and trimming grass, moving dirt and transporting materials and equipment.
Inspect and service equipment to assure safe and efficient operation of equipment.
Operate and maintain heavy power equipment safely.
Operate a vehicle to conduct work.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Assure personal safety and safety of others.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Interpret project diagrams and illustrations.
Communicate effectively.
Work cooperatively with others.
Demonstrate mental acuity sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position.
Work within stressful situations.
Be motivated to produce high quality work product.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE, LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above including one year's groundskeeping experience involving the use of heavy construction/landscape equipment in a large institutional or multi-facility setting.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Class C California driver's license and acquisition of forklift certification within first five months of employment. Must be, and remain, insurable under the District's vehicle driver's insurance policy at the standard rate.
Full-time Employees earn up to:
  • 12 paid vacation days per year
  • 12 paid sick days per year with unlimited accumulation
  • 13 paid holidays

The District offers two excellent medical plans, Blue Shield and Kaiser Permanente; two dental plans, Delta Dental and MetLife SafeGuard; and vision care through Vision Service Plan (VSP). Currently full-time employees (employees working 6 hours or more per day) pay 20% of the premium cost for these plans. All plans are available to the employees and their dependents. This coverage is available to employees working a minimum of 20 hours per week.
Retirement benefits include membership in CalPERS (California Public Employee's Retirement System) and Social Security (OASDI). This is a joint contribution plan. To qualify for CalPERS an employee must work a minimum of 20 hours per week or already be a member, if not the employee is eligible for an alternative retirement plan.
Additionally, the District encourages employees to pursue professional growth, and provides financial incentive for classified employees completing professional growth programs. Additional benefits available to employees to which the District does not contribute include life insurance, a Section 125 Flexible Benefit Plan, an income protection plan, and a credit union.
Substitute employees are not eligible for vacation or holiday pay but are eligible to earn sick leave at the rate of one hour per 30 hours worked, not to exceed 48 hours. Further, substitute employees are not automatically eligible for CalPERS or District health benefits.
