Cornell AgriTech, a research farm in Geneva, is seeking a Field Assistant to work in the facility’s greenhouses and maintain the grounds.
Must haves:
· Formal training beyond a high school diploma of one-year college coursework
· Minimum 6 months experience in greenhouse operations and maintenance of plants in controlled environment
· Ability to concentrate during repetitive tasks to ensure accuracy
· Ability to work outside at any time of year in Western, NY under Cornell health and safety guidelines
· Experience with operation of basic equipment and machinery including small tractors, mowers, weed eaters, sprayers, edgers, spreaders, and power tools including chain saws
· Familiarity with computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and web browsers
· Willingness and ability to become a NYS Certified Pesticide Applicator, and must obtain and maintain full Pesticide Applicator Certification within first six months of employment
· A valid driver license and ability to successfully pass a driver background check
· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and undertake repetitive physical activities
Must be able to:
· Assist with the daily operations of the greenhouses at Cornell AgriTech including watering,
fertilizing, planting, along with monitoring facility mechanical and
environmental control equipment
· Provide plant care for research projects, including application of pesticides as part of an integrated pest management program, and proper filing of required documentation
· Mow lawns, prune and perform other grounds work as needed
· Operate and maintain greenhouse tractors, mowers, sprayers, edgers, spreaders, and power tools
· Perform necessary maintenance on tractors, mowers, sprayers, edgers, spreaders, and power tools
· Be available for required occasional weekend and holiday watering of the greenhouses and off-hours call back for snow removal from roads, sidewalks, and parking areas on campus
