Common Threads is seeking a qualified Grant & Contract Accountant to support our finance team. This position plays a key role in reviewing internal controls and systems to ensure compliance and effectiveness, including grants compliance.

This position reports directly to the Controller and may include occasional travel to other Common Threads markets, as needed.

Responsibilities:  

Grant Fund Management & Reporting (30%)

  • Work with the Controller to monitor spending across grants to ensure appropriate expense allocation, timely use of funds, and compliance with donor’s operational and contractual requirements
  • Coordinate with Controller to prepare timely and accurate external financial reports and invoices that comply with all donor regulations; work with Grants Specialist to ensure that reports are backed by adequate documentation and records
  • Support budget revisions and reallocation requests, in collaboration with Controller/Director of Development

Project Management and Coordination (30%)

  • In close coordination with the Controller and Director of Development provide project management support for pre-award grants, ensuring clear timelines, and adherence to roles and responsibilities, in order to complete agreements in a timely manner
  • Manage communication across Common Threads teams related to grant/contract negotiations to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective efficient collaboration with finance
  • Guide and support teams to plan and implement strong award close-out, including the handover of donor relationships to ensure donor stewardship continuity for ongoing and future projects
  • Supervise Grants Specialist position: provide guidance and oversight of the position’s key responsibilities in pre and post award grant compliance activities

Grant Compliance (25%)

  • Monitor ongoing compliance with donor requirements by working primarily with project leads, project managers, and Controller to confirm and, where needed, build capacity for adherence to key policies and procedures and development of corrective action plans when necessary
  • Provide training and support to program and site staff, so they have knowledge on the strengthening of internal controls, accurate records maintenance, and important donor regulations
  • Coordinate with proposal leads and site grants management staff to respond to donor pre-award compliance inquiries and to ensure that compliance-related costs are included in proposal budgets
  • Complete grants compliance checklists and grant launch materials for awarded grants as needed to ensure staff managing the grant-funded project understand and have the resources to comply with the donor terms applicable to their grant-related activities
  • Respond to ad hoc questions regarding the interpretation or application of donor guidelines
  • Communicate and meet with the funder on financial or compliance aspects of the project, as needed

Internal Controls and Financial Oversight (15%)

  • Provide support as needed to Department, regarding meetings with auditors, preparation for single audits; and funder monitoring visits
  • Ensure consistent application of GAAP accounting standards and Common Thread’s financial policies
  • Assist with maintaining and updating policies and procedures related to Grants Management, Procurement, and Credit Card Management
  • Responsible for maintaining systems of internal controls as it relates to the distribution and use of company credit cards

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or relevant field required.
  • Minimum three (3) years accounting and grants management experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
  • Proven and extensive knowledge of federal cost principles, and other applicable rules and regulations including the Office of Management and Budget Uniform Guidance 2 CFR Part 200 and Single Audit Act.
  • Ability to multitask while being highly detail-oriented. Must be able to effectively handle multiple assignments and consult as necessary during execution
  • Ability to work within a mission-driven environment to develop professional and respectful relationships with people, both internal and external to Common Threads
  • Experience working with culturally diverse audiences
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel and Abila MIP accounting software (preferred).

  • Common Threads employees are subject to a background check prior to employment
  • This is a full-time position that will primarily work Monday - Friday, 9am-5pm, but some nights and/or weekends may be required
