Job description

Under supervision of the Instructor, the Graduate Teaching Assistant for IEPG 8531 (Geographic Information Systems, GIS) or IEPG 8631 (Advanced GIS) assists students in learning the principles and practices of GIS, and employing those principles and practices through the life cycle of a GIS project. This is a non-exempt, temporary part time staff position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist students in learning GIS techniques via online and in person meetings, tutorials, demonstrations, and notes. Mentor students in the development, management, and execution of GIS projects incorporating geospatial analysis techniques to address issues related to their various programs of study.

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Model behavior and techniques in research, troubleshooting and interpersonal communication

Periodically compile peer review feedback results to share with students

Performs other related duties as requested by Program

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Use ArcGIS Pro to design, develop, troubleshoot and produce GIS products

Use Excel, Access, R, or other software to clean and analyze data for use in a GIS product

Support students in their use of Middlebury technology in the PacLab, via Aporto, and via VPN and other means, as necessary

Proactively identify challenges to students' learning, and suggest solutions

Support the instructor in compilation of student survey responses (not grading)

Employ solid written and oral communication skills

Display skilled command of grammar and spelling, and attention to detail

Display excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work cooperatively with culturally and linguistically diverse students.

Exhibit willingness and ability to comply with Institute policies, procedures, and mandates.

Education/Experience

A combination of education and experience, which would demonstrate possession of the skills required for the position.

You must have successfully completed a semester-long GIS class (at MIIS or elsewhere) and have familiarity with GIS theory and applications.

You must provide evidence of substantial project work from one of these: (a) a professional setting, (b) an advanced GIS class, or (c) an advanced geospatial analysis, data analysis, or related class.

You must have experience working with ArcGIS Pro software.

Time Requirements

You will need to be available (in person or online) during class time, and to hold additional computer lab hours during the week, accommodating both in-person and online students. For the Spring 2024 semester, we expect this will require approximately 10 hours per week.

Pay is level B.

Student Employment Eligibility:

Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus.

Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.

Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government. (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to U.S. citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component.

Student are not eligible to work remotely from International locations.


Hour Limitations:

All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods). The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess. During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
