Position Description
ENTRY SALARY: $53,631.63
The Gas Technician III performs advanced manual and skilled lead work in one or more specialized areas of construction, maintenance, inspection, installation, propane, cathodic protection, and repair work on gas mains, service lines, gas appliances, and related apparatus. Performs work in the warehouse and the meter shop. Work is performed independently and reviewed upon completion for conformity with instructions and established standards.
PLEASE NOTE: Candidates that meet the minimum requirements will be scheduled/required to take and pass a written exam. Candidates that pass exam will be invited to sit for a formal interview at a later date.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Oversees, leads, and supervises various crews performing installation, construction, maintenance, and repair work on various gas appliances, gas mains, service lines and other apparatus.
  • Performs complete advanced inspections of gas mainlines, service lines, and meters to guarantee compliance with all Federal, State and Clearwater Gas System regulations and procedures; monitors contractor work and compliance with designs.
  • Drives propane delivery/bobtail trucks and fills tanks with propane for residential, commercial and industrial customers.
  • Designs, installs, and inspects rectifiers and anodes to eliminate corrosive electrolysis between gas pipelines and ground; submits designs to contractors
  • Measures, compares, and determines causes of electrical activity concerning gas pipelines and ground.
  • Evaluates, checks, and monitors all jobs; ensures as-builds, bore logs, and federally mandated pressure test records; reviews all work and submits appropriate invoices.
  • Oversees contractors and job site operations; identifies any obstacles, monitors work progress, and ensures completion and compliance with standards.
  • Designs, supervises, lays-out, and installs gas house piping and gas appliances including connecting water lines to hot water heaters; performs cost benefit analysis on new installations.
  • Designs service installations, installs propane tanks, extends gas lines from propane tanks to the gas meters and buildings.
  • Performs other duties of an advance nature concerning the use of natural or L.P. gases; responds to all after hour emergencies to protect life and property when on call.
  • Reconditions meter or regulators to meet Federal, State and Clearwater Gas System standards.
  • Trains and provides quality control for subordinates.
  • Applies skill in the use and care of tools of the gas trade.
  • Performs related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
  • A valid State driver's license is required.
  • Obtain and maintain the State of Florida Propane Qualifier license within one (1) year from the time the minimum criteria is met to sit for the exam (Propane section employees only).
  • Does this position require a Commercial Driver's License? Yes
  • Type: Possession and maintenance of Class A or B CDL with necessary endorsements based on area of assignment.

This position is required to operate the below equipment, machines, tools, and other work aides: Ditcher, air hammer, trenching machine, power tools, fusion machines, digital manometer, combustible gas detector, gas prover, and other equipment as assigned.
Education and Experience: High School graduation, High School Equivalency Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate AND a minimum of three (3) years of experience in the installation, service and repair of gas devices and gas distribution system operations; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must be able to pass random drug testing.
