The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is actively seeking applications for a faculty member in Graphic Design / Photography at our La Plata campus.
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts is seeking an innovative and experienced educator to join our team. The faculty member will support a robust and growing visual arts program, by teaching courses in both graphic design and photography, to an energetic and diverse student body. Our faculty work closely with students inside and outside of the classroom to help them maximize their success. Visual and Performing Arts faculty participate in regional, state, and national professional activities, including exhibitions, publications, and conferences, and are also active in collaborations with other disciplines and departments at the college.

Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe successful faculty member will teach fifteen credit-hours per semester / thirty credit- hours per academic year of day or evening classes in the areas of graphic design and photography. Flexibility is required to work in this position as teaching assignments may vary from semester to semester. There may be an opportunity to teach classes in the summer also. Faculty may be assigned to teach on any campus or center where CSM offers classes. The faculty member hired in this position is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning and success.
At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, holding office hours, serving on various committees, and demonstrating a commitment to professional development thorough participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities, and organizations.
DUTIES AND STANDARDS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Teach thirty credits of courses per contract-year in the graphic design and photography disciplines.
  • Teach a range of courses that may include morning, day, or evening. Opportunities may exist to teach in the summer session outside the 30-credit load.
  • This position’s primary campus assignment will be in La Plata but may be required to participate in teaching or other activities on our other campuses.
  • Engage students in their learning through active and collaborative learning approaches.
  • Meet with students outside of class to assist them with being successful college students.
  • Incorporate culturally relevant pedagogies into the teaching and learning process.
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate ability to read and interpret information.
  • Demonstrate ability to deliver instruction to diverse student populations, with varied levels of learning and preparation.
  • Knowledge and use of student engagement strategies that support completion and student success goals.
  • Demonstrate experience providing feedback students can use to improve their performance.
  • Maintain an ongoing program of professional development and participate in professional organizations, workshops, seminars, conferences, and activities.
  • Mastery of appropriate computer operation skills. Minimum Education and Training
  • Master of Fine Arts degree preferred; Master’s degree in related field considered.
  • Evidence of successful teaching in the area(s) of graphic design and / or photography; at least 2 years of teaching experience preferred.
  • Competence in the Adobe Creative Suite, strong background in other course-relevant technology. Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
  • Strong preference given to candidates who can teach photographic studio lighting.
  • Ability to use word processing, basic Internet applications, and basic database navigation.
  • Ability to use an educational enterprise, learning management system such as Brightspace Desire 2 Learn to support and facilitate instructional delivery.
  • Ability to teach in face-to-face, web, web-hybrid, and hy-flex formats.
