COLLEGE AND CAREER COUNSELOR
Notre Dame College Prep, a Catholic, all-boys high school, located in Niles, Illinois, is seeking a well-qualified College and Career Counselor. The College and Career Counselor is appointed by the Principal and serves under the direct supervision of the Director of Counseling. The College and Career Counselor assists students in making informed decisions regarding College and Career options. The College and Career Counselor works with students throughout their four years at Notre Dame, but primarily supports upperclass students on their journeys beyond high school.
EXPECTATIONS:
- 7:30 am to 3:15 pm – 10 months per year, other hours as needed to fulfill accountabilities
- Counselors are expected to work one week prior to the beginning of school and one week following the completion of school as well as over the Christmas break as needed to prepare for the second semester
- Presenting at evening activities such as junior parent night, senior parent night, financial aid information night, is expected
- All staff members support supervision of students as needed
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Specific accountabilities shall include, but not be limited to:
- Knowledge of the mission and philosophy of Notre Dame College Prep and support in incorporating and communicating its vision.
- Provide comprehensive College and Career counseling.
- Be informed regarding college admissions policies.
- Arrange all appointments and meetings with college representatives.
- Schedule seniors to meet with college representatives and provide them with a calendar of representative visits.
- Integrate and utilize student data into the Naviance portal.
- Inform students and parents of local college fair programs.
- Arrange a College Essay Workshop, andCollege Financial Aid and Information Night.
- Process applications for admission to college, including preparation of transcripts and test scores and writing recommendations.
- Coordinate all scholarship and financial aid requirements.
- Plan, schedule, and present sophomore, junior and senior Parent Insight Nights.
- Prepare and mail final transcripts and reports.
- Maintain active membership in the Chicago Area College Counselor Association, the National Association for College Admission Counseling, and the Illinois Association for College Admissions Counseling.
- Provide opportunities for students and families to be informed about and apply for scholarships.
- Maintain records of students’ plans after they leave Notre Dame College Prep.
- Administer and supervise the standardized testing program (HSPT, PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10, PSAT, ACT, and SAT).
- Administer and supervise Advanced Placement testing.
- Communicate NCAA Clearinghouse requirements with students, parents and college.
- Work collaboratively with the counseling department in establishing departmental goals and objectives.
- Utilize data to inform decision making.
- Participate in departmental staffing and meetings.
- Maintain open communication within the department and school regarding specific issues involving students, parents, staff, and community, as well as program developments.
- Support faculty and staff in preparing and sending letters of recommendation.
- Communicate with departments and teachers regarding specific issues involving College and Career planning.
- Order and requisition materials as needed within the budgeted needs of the department.
- Continue professional self-development and foster professional development within the department.
- Other duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment:
Must be fingerprinted and complete all Archdiocese of Chicago youth protection criteria and expectations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor degree in content area or teaching in that content area, excellent communication skills, an energetic and outgoing personality, strong administrative/organizational skills, and familiarity with 1:1 technology, Google Docs and basic computing are essential.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Master degree in counseling or counseling related fields, experience in secondary education, and experience in a Catholic school setting are preferred.
Physical Working Conditions:
Must be able to lift light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (10 to 20 pounds). Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
