HIRING TIMELINE AND DATES
The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.
- Job Offer and Background Process begins: Week of January 22, 2024.
- Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
- Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.
The ideal candidate will possess:

Working Conditions:
- May be required to work a variety of shifts, which may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Work primarily takes place in areas with potential exposure to caustic chemicals and potential exposure to contagious diseases.
- Incumbents may work with or around occasionally violent and hostile people such as jail inmates or patients with dementia or behavioral illness.
Qualifying Experience:
Five (5) years of experience as a journey level cook preparing meals in a large institutional kitchen for 100 or more persons per meal, two (2) years of which must have included lead level experience.
The possession of a valid Food Safety Certification is required at the time of appointment in accordance with FDA Food Code 2-101.11 and California Retail Food Code, 113794.

Condition of Employment:
As part of the County of San Diego's pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Qualified candidates will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications.
