Flower Farm Assistant

Position Title: Flower Farm Assistant, Part-time

General Description:

An energetic, responsible, and hard-working team member who completes day-to-day tasks on our production-focused Flower Farm. Be part of a small but mighty team to organically grow beautiful flowers to enrich our local community through markets, CSA, workshops, and special event flowers.

This position is seasonal and part-time in nature, from mid-late March through late November. The position is 20 hours a week of field work as well as Wednesday Farmers Market support, additional hours may also be available for assistance with special events as needed. A second part-time flower position is available for a total of 8 hours/week as well.

Field work responsibilities may include the following:

• Watering: greenhouse seedlings, field transplants, and crops using a hose and drip irrigation

• Greenhouse potting up

• Washing flower buckets

• Transplanting and planting crops

• Weeding quickly and efficiently

• Anchoring support stakes and trellising flower crops

• Fertilizing and treating crops with organic inputs

• Handling all flowers with care to prevent damage and maximize bloom quality

• Flower harvesting to be done efficiently and accurately

• Understanding and performing safe and responsible use of tools and equipment

• Performing general maintenance duties such as managing compost, string trimming and mowing pathways.

• Assisting with start and end of season farm tasks, such as managing weed fabric, trellising, and crop residues from beds

• Assisting with Wednesday and occasional Saturday markets or plant sales, which may include packaging bouquets, loading the vehicle, setting up at market, and staffing the market stand.

Training is available for these tasks with the expectation that they can then be performed independently.

Requirements:

• Must be punctual and reliable

• Must be able and willing to regularly lift 50 lbs, as well as work standing, bending, or moving at ground level for transplanting and weeding

• Must be able and willing to hustle and work in a focused, efficient manner

• Must request schedule changes with advance notice

• Must be able and willing to work in all types of weather outdoors

• Must have access to reliable transportation (the farm is not easily accessible by public transportation)

• Must possess effective and positive communication skills

• Must be goal-oriented and self-motivated when working independently and with others

• Must follow all general rules related to working on the SAHC Community Farm

Starting ASAP through late November.

Wednesdays 10:30 am–6:30pm

Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays: 8:30–12:30 am

*Note: in the heat of summer or cold of fall, we may adjust hours to accommodate weather.

$18 per hour plus flowers + veggies as seasonally available. After 3 months, a compensation increase will be evaluated based on performance.

*Please note that the Flower Farmer position is not directly involved in creating floral designs.
