Description
This position responds to fire and other emergency incidents to suppress fires, rescue victims, provide emergency medical care, and perform other duties as required.
Examples of Duties
MAJOR DUTIES

• Operates a variety of pumps, ladders, hoses, and other equipment at the scene of fire, rescue and other emergency incidents.

• Completes required reports detailing fire, emergency medical, and other incident responses.

• Completes required training and maintains required certifications.

• Inspects equipment to ensure that it is in proper working order; washes and cleans equipment on a regular basis; repairs and performs routine maintenance on equipment; ensures the proper functioning of all equipment and vehicles.

• Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies aboard vehicles; conducts regular inspections.

• Provides fire prevention information to the public; assists in teaching fire safety classes; provides tours of the fire station.

• Performs housekeeping, grounds keeping, and building maintenance duties.

• Conducts station and apparatus tours for school and other community groups.

• Participates in public education events.

• Conducts pre-incident planning on commercial and residential structures as requested.

• Inspects and services fire hydrants.

• Assists with fire investigations to determine cause and origin of fires.

• Performs related duties.

• Responds to fire calls and uses firefighting skills to evaluate and carry out actions to control the emergency most efficiently at hand; assists with the fighting of structural fires.

• Assists other personnel in providing emergency medical care at emergency and non-emergency scenes.

• Responds to fire calls and uses firefighting skills to evaluate and carry out actions to control the emergency most efficiently at hand; assists with the fighting of structural fires.

• Provides emergency medical care at emergency and non-emergency scenes at the EMT level.

Firefighter/Paramedic

• Responds to fire calls and uses firefighting skills to evaluate and carry out actions to most efficiently control the emergency at hand; assists with the fighting of structural fires.

• Provides emergency medical care at emergency and non-emergency scenes at the Paramedic level.

Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Firefighter:

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

• Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training

• Possession of or ability to readily obtain Florida Certified Firefighter II certification.

• Current CPR certification.

• Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate state EMT certification within one year of hire.

Firefighter/EMT:

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

• The work is typically performed in an office, except while at fire or other emergency scenes. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, extreme temperatures, hazardous situations, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.

PTO Leave: Leave begins accruing immediately; however, cannot be used until three (3) months of service has been completed: The schedule varies slighter for Fire Fighters.

At the end of the year, any unused PTO leave will be placed in your PTO bank (up to 440 total hours). Time will be accrued bi-weekly & shown on each paycheck. After the 440 hours are filled, any unused PTO leave will be lost and cannot be used the following year.
RETIREMENT: Certified Firefighters are fully vested after 10 years of employment. Employees can become partially vested beginning at five (5) years of service. Partial vesting at five (5) years is 50%, six (6) years 60%, seven (7) years 70%, eight (8) years 80%, and nine (9) years 90%. Firefighters are eligible for retirement upon attainment of age 50 and the completion of 20 years of credited service or the attainment of age 55 and the completion of 10 years of credited service. You have the option at the time of employment to elect to be eligible for retirement upon completion of 25 years credited service regardless of age. This election is irrevocable. The amount of normal retirement benefit is based on your credited service and average final compensation. See Firefighters' Pension Plan Summary for more details.
