Under general supervision, performs emergency response work in firefighting, emergency rescue, and emergency medical care. Work involves responding to emergency and non-emergency incidents in the area to perform fire suppression, emergency rescue, emergency medical care, hazardous material containment or clean-up, emergency site stabilization and other related tasks. Requires operating equipment and apparatus associated with such incidents in a timely and safe manner. Emergency medical response responsibilities include basic life support EMT procedures, protocols, and standing orders and the ability to operate all BLS medical equipment. Work also involves training in the methods and techniques of emergency response operations, hazardous material operations, emergency medical treatment procedures and the use of related equipment and apparatus. Employee is also responsible for inspecting and maintaining equipment, performing fire inspections, and performing various maintenance and custodial duties at the assigned fire station. Employee is subject to the usual hazards of emergency response work. Reports to a Fire Lieutenant.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Responds with a company of firefighters to incidents requiring fire fighting, emergency rescue, emergency medical treatment or hazardous material response; drives fire apparatus to the emergency response scene, ensuring that warning devices are in operation when necessary; operates and monitors equipment and apparatus, such as pumps, hoses, gauges, air compressors, ladders, aerial platforms, etc., at emergency response scenes.
- Performs fire suppression functions of a firefighter, including positioning and operating hoses, ventilating buildings, performing salvage operations, etc.
- Inspects assigned emergency response apparatus and equipment daily to ensure efficient operating condition and readiness; cleans and maintains equipment, as necessary, after completion of emergency response operations; performs minor repairs and assists in repair of apparatus and equipment, as appropriate.
- Attends and participates in training sessions on such topics as fire suppression techniques, fire prevention, equipment techniques, emergency medical care, hazardous material containment, street layout and building and hydrant location; maintains knowledge of fire hydraulics and apparatus hydraulic systems.
- Prepares and maintains activity records, providing pertinent information to department personnel on following shift.
- May serve as Lieutenant in absence of Lieutenant.
- Performs necessary emergency rescue work in accordance with established protocols; administers necessary emergency medical care in accordance with level of certification.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Cleans and performs minor maintenance on department buildings; maintains fire station grounds.
- Maintains inventory of all apparatus and related fire station equipment; tests and flushes fire hydrants.
- May appear before civic, community, school and other interested groups and make presentations on topics of fire safety, fire prevention and advanced life support.
- Performs other related work as required.
- Position subject to Emergency Recall as needed 24/7/365.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school, and experience as an emergency medical technician and paramedic, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a Certificate of Compliance as a firefighter from the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards.
- Must hold and maintain State of Florida Certification as Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic.
- Possession of a valid Florida Class “E” driver’s license.
- Approved Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) certificate of completion.
- Valid American Heart Association Healthcare Provider card or equivalent BLS/CPR card from accredited institution.
- Signs tobacco use affidavit; agrees to maintain no tobacco use on and off duty as a condition of employment
