Duties
  • Serves as fully trained member of a firefighting crew responding to emergencies involving fire, emergency medical services, hazardous material and other protection of life and property.
  • Administers emergency medical care and treatment for illnesses and injuries of occupational and non-occupational origin for soldiers, dependents, civilian employees and visitors.
  • Serves as the driver-operator of one or more types of fire fighting vehicles under all types of conditions.
  • Performs inspections, tests repairs, and preventive maintenance of all assigned motorized equipment and support equipment.
  • Performs fire prevention/fire safety pre-plan activities (under the direction of a certified crew chief) in low hazard facilities where fire hazards are expected.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. or more in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
  • In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. This position performs, as required, mutual aid support to local fire departments.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has been designated as essential during inclement weather, fire, hazardous duty and other emergency operations.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To qualify at the GS-05 grade level you must possess at least one of the following:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes work that involves experience (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; and (2) operation of fire communications equipment.
OR
Completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or another related field.
OR
Some specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and have less than four years of education as described in B. The combination of experience and education must equal 100 percent. (To compute the percentage, divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide the semester hours of undergraduate education by 30. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify) (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Possess the specialized experience AND the education.
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Firefighter I and Firefighter II Certification certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M
To qualify at the GS-06 grade level you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes work that involves experience: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) operation of fire communications equipment; and (4) controlling hazardous materials incidents.
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, and a Driver/Operator Pumper Certification certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M
To qualify at the GS-07 grade level you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes work that involves experience: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention incidents.
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Firefighter I & II, Driver Operator Pumper, Airport Firefighter, Driver Operator Aircraft Rescue & Firefighting (ARFF), Driver Operator Aerial, Hazardous Materials Technician, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Mobile Water Supply (MWS) Certification certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement for GS-05: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-04).
Time in Grade Requirement for GS-06: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).
Time in Grade Requirement for GS-07: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
Education
