GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, conduct fire/safety inspections of residential buildings in order to determine compliance with applicable fire codes and regulations; provide assistance to the public; and perform related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None.
- Conduct field inspection of assigned occupancies to best ensure compliance with adopted safety regulations; note code violations, provide findings in issued reports and express compliance expectations in both written and oral form.
- Provide information and assistance to the general public in the field and office; explain and interpret applicable codes, and ordinances.
- Maintain files and records related to areas of assignment; input and retrieve information into computer database.
- Receive and investigate fire/safety related complaints.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Fire/safety principles and practices, including familiarity with basic methods and materials used in building construction.
- Pertinent adopted state and local FIRE SAFETY regulations.
- An emphasis on life safety devices and systems is highly desirable.
- Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers.
- Principles and practices of effective customer service.
Ability to:
- Understand, interpret, enforce and explain provisions of applicable fire/safety code requirements to the public.
- Effectively apply fire/safety inspection procedures.
- Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Successful completion of college level courses in Fire Prevention, Fire Science , Fire Protection, Engineering, Building Construction is desirable. Education in fire/safety inspection/technology. Accreditation from OSFM State Fire Training, International Code Council or NFPA is highly desirable.
Licensing & Certificates:
- Possession of or ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid Class "C" California driver's license with a safe, satisfactory driving record and ability to maintain through the course of employment.
- Possession of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) American Red Cross for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Providers or American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers or ability to obtain within six months of employment.
- Current possession of California PC832 Powers of Arrest or ability to obtain certificate within one (1) year of appointment.
- California State Fire marshal's courses in Fire Prevention 1A and 1B, or Fire Inspector 1A and 1B or International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector certification or agility to obtain within one (1) year of of appointment.
