Position Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), the Financial Analyst is responsible for the financial and grants management of NEO’s funds and projects. The main designated program area of this position is the Fiscal Sponsorship (FS) Projects. In particular, this position is highly engaged and involved with the monthly reporting and annual budgeting processes for the FS Team. This position enjoys exposure to many aspects of nonprofit finance due to the diversity of NEO’s projects, whose focus areas range from civic engagement to racial equity to reproductive rights. The ideal candidate is organized, reliable and motivated with prior experience in the nonprofit or public sector. Additionally, NEO and the Finance Department provide a supportive and collaborative work environment with opportunities for growth due to the small core team.

Key Job Functions

Financial Reporting & Grant Reporting

  • Manage the monthly financial reporting process for NEO’s Fiscal Sponsorship Projects including budget to actuals, general ledger detail, encumbrance report and other schedules.
  • Manage the preparation of monthly grant financial reports for NEO’s FS Projects, including spenddown reports and general ledger detail reports.
  • Ensure that financial reports and tools meet the needs of NEO and its program departments.
  • Ensure that high-quality financial reports are delivered in an accurate and timely manner.

Budgeting

  • Working with the AD of FP&A, manage NEO’s annual budgeting process and periodic budget modification processes for NEO’s FS projects.
  • Support staff and provide training on annual budget and budget modification processes.
  • Upload and maintain budgets to NEO’s financial system, NetSuite.
  • Collaborate with FS staff to collect, compile, and analyze revenue projections on a monthly basis.

Grants Management (Pre-Award & Post-Award)

  • Develop and review project-specific proposal budgets.
  • Ensure that grant budgets are uploaded and maintained in NEO’s financial system.
  • Prepare ad hoc financial reports – personnel expense report, grant reconciliation, etc.

Monthly Close

  • Assisting the Sr. Financial Analyst, prepare monthly allocation entries .
  • Work with the Operations Department to ensure shared costs are correctly coded at point of expense.
  • Review and maintain proper and accurate dimensional coding of transactions in NEO’s financial system.
  • Prepare correcting GL journal entries as needed.

Other Responsibilities

  • Support internal control management of cash flow risk by monitoring net asset balances of NEO’s funds and projects, and working with program staff to develop plans when a concern arises.
  • Meet with the Fiscal Sponsorship Team to provide additional training as needed.
  • Provide coverage and backup for the FP&A Team as needed.
  • Other duties or special projects as assigned by the Assistant Director of FP&A and CFO.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have prior experience or knowledge of nonprofit grants management, be proficient in Excel, and be comfortable working independently and managing competing deadlines. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for a candidate to perform this job successfully.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Accounting or Finance or a Bachelor’s combined with relevant work experience in Business, Accounting, or Finance required.
  • At least 2-3 years of budgeting and financial reporting experience required.
  • High proficiency in Excel required.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices required, preferably in the nonprofit context.
  • Detail-oriented ability to work with financial data, spot trends, and ensure accuracy.
  • Strong analytical skills are essential.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects successfully, while maintaining collaborative relationships with other departments.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit grant accounting and reporting (pre & post award) preferred.

Benefits

Compensation:
Compensation for this role will vary depending on the experience of the candidate. The salary range for this position is $65,000 – $75,000 per year. Location Details

NEO Philanthropy has its headquarters in NYC and the finance department is based in that office. NEO HQ has a hybrid work remote structure based on job function. It is our expectation that this role will be able to be fully remote, with in-person meetings required 2-3 times per year; however, staff will have the option to select a partially in-office schedule if they are based in NYC. This role will be expected to be available during the working hours 10a-4p EST.
