Job SummaryThe Field Technician, Design and Construction is responsible for supporting Design and Construction as well as Public Works projects. The role requires surveying and producing as built drawings in AutoCAD, and the field supervision of projects. Furthermore, the position ensures all information is in accordance with sound engineering practices, approved CN railway standards, specifications, procedures, and within the CN operating plan.
Main ResponsibilitiesDevelop, prioritize, and manage multiple projects and budgets to maximize asset utilization and cost control within project scope and approved budget
Perform utility reviews as needed
Perform safety audits and investigate safety incidents
Conduct pre-bid and Construction progress meetings
Coordinate work between CN and external parties
Handle workblocks and oversee construction activity in the field
Review and approve invoices
Update track schematics and track plans as needed
Review plans and specifications provided by consultants and provide comments and feedback
Provide accurate as built surveys and technical assistance for internal projects
Perform surveying (e.g., Global Positioning System (GPS), robotic total station, and traditional methods) as project plans require
Develop as built drawings (e.g., horizontal and vertical alignments, cross sections) utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D
Working ConditionsThe role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments in various weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role is required to work on varying shifts to cover operations that run 24/7 including weekends, holidays, and emergency response. The role requires regular travel (60%) within the region which may include overnight stays away from home, based on territory and project requirements.

Education/Certification/DesignationHigh School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
2 years Associate Degree, Licensed Surveyor in Training (LSIT)*
Valid Driver's License
Certified Engineer in Training (EIT) Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or Professional Land Surveyor (PLS)*
