Job Description

This position is responsible for harvest operations, harvest equipment, harvester logistics, harvest food safety and coordination with growers involving harvest operations. This position will lead and direct Field Harvest Operators in daily operations as directed by Agricultural Manager and/or Director Agricultural Operations.

Summary/objective

The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified. May perform other duties as assigned.

  • Responsible for the readiness, safety, and cleanliness of all harvest equipment utilized in the fields daily.
  • Understand the components of gas and diesel engines, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems on farm equipment to be able to implement in practice.
  • Conduct winter overhaul and maintenance of all company equipment, i.e.: tractors, harvesters, pickups, planters, chopper, combine, and S.F. trailers and tubs.
  • Order parts and supplies required to perform successful repairs.
  • Complete harvester inspections and annual maintenance checklists for all equipment.
  • Coordinate and comply with preventive maintenance programs throughout the harvest season.
  • Perform troubleshooting and repairs to all equipment as needed.
  • Responsible for the availability and readiness of harvest equipment, according to harvest schedule.
  • Repair harvest equipment as needed.
  • Understand and comply with all safety requirements established by the Company and federal/state safety laws. Ensure a robust safety culture, including awareness, adherence to programs.
  • Understand and comply with all Primus GFS requirements, and food safety and quality controls standards established by the Company.
  • Work with professionalism and ethics with growers and their employees.
  • Direct the work of Harvest Operators as needed to accomplish tasks.
  • Ensure adherence to all Company standards regarding employee safety, productivity, product quality and food safety practices.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Minimum 5 years related farm equipment mechanical experience.
  • General knowledge of farming and mechanics and understanding of farming technologies and practices.
  • General knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP's), HACCP, Quality, Food Safety Programs.
  • Experience/knowledge of IQF processes preferred.
  • Dependable, reliable, self-starter, and able to work independently as well as a member of a team.
  • Proven collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to lift, push, pull, carry 50 lbs., ability to work in field conditions.
  • Travel to local and regional fields will be required on a daily basis. During main season, work is variable, hours are lengthy, and night work is common. Position requires overnight travel to growing areas and/or for company meetings, for extended periods.
  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to travel to fields and growing regions.
  • California driver's license and the ability to be covered under company-sponsored vehicle insurance program required.

  • Ability to stand, walk on cold, wet environment.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing job functions employee will regularly be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, vibration. Noise level can be loud.
  • While performing the functions of this job, employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear; and frequently required to sit; occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste or smell. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs., regularly lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.

Preferred education, certificates and experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
