Position Summary

The Specialist is responsible for inventory and management of the government documents received via the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) and housed at WU Libraries offsite storage facility. Supports research needs of WU community and citizens by maintaining condition and order of the federal document collection. This position requires a high level of functional independence and sound judgment. Works closely with staff in building operations and facilities. Reports to the Collection Space Supervisor.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains the condition and order of the depository collections. Inventories and processes existing collections. Shelves all depository materials. Periodically removes outdated material in accordance with federal depository instructions. Documents procedures and maintains statistics.
  • Processes all publications received from the Government Printing Office including creating, downloading, and editing MARC records in the Libraries catalog. Reviews and verifies accuracy of existing holdings in catalog.
  • Monitors exchange lists; participates in cooperative collection development by accepting and requesting materials from, or offering deaccessioned materials to, other depository libraries according to sub-regional responsibilities and standards.
  • Retrieves items upon request from patrons, library staff, depository library staff and the Government Documents Depository Coordinator.
  • Other duties as required.

Working Conditions

  • May be exposed to dust and mold.
  • Must be able to travel to on and off campus locations.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
  • Ability to work on call in the event of an emergency.
  • Occasional travel required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant library experience or coursework in librarianship.
  • Experience working with government information resources in an academic or public library that is a participant of the Federal Depository Library Program.
  • Experience working in research library environment.
  • Working knowledge of the Superintendent of Documents classification system.
  • Experience with MARC records, basic descriptive cataloging, and serials management desirable.
  • Experience with integrated library systems; familiarity with Innovative Interfaces desirable.
  • Handles detailed work with a high level of accuracy.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Exhibits sound judgement and decision-making.
  • Organizes varying workloads, establishes priorities, and meets deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to use standard software such as MS Office and to learn specialized software and new technologies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and related experience.

G07-H

Salary Range

$18.91 - $29.32 / Hourly The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
