Job description

Schedule: Monday-Friday between 0700 – 1800, not to exceed 40 hours a week. May require overage hours to provide effective patient care and avoid patient abandonment.

Location: Nellis AFB, NV - Family Practice Clinic

Pay rate: $57/hr - $67/hr

  • Strongly preferred working knowledge of the military health care system including TRICARE health benefits.
  • Shall provide outpatient health care to qualifying beneficiaries as scheduled by the Government.
  • Care shall include but not be limited to continuing, comprehensive health maintenance and medical care to entire family regardless of sex, age, or type of problem.
  • Will maintain a program of comprehensive health for the family unit, to include preventive medicine, behavioral sciences, and community health.
  • Responsible for a regularly appointed clinic, compatible with workload and, in addition, provide immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur. Shall
    have the capability to:
    o Collect and record, in proper format, medical and social historical data appropriate to the patient's condition.
    o Perform a general physical examination.
  • May become the primary care manager for a panel of patients. As a PCM, will be the primary person responsible for the management of the health and wellness of his/her assigned patients. Duties include:
  • Examination of patients, formulation differential diagnostic plans, defines and orders required diagnostic testing.
  • Interpretation of examination findings and test results, and implementation of treatment plans.
  • Determines need for consultation and assists in medical care and treatment provided at the direction of other specialists.
  • Approving/Disapproving subspecialty referrals.
  • Answering patient telephone consults with the assistance of clinic staff.
  • Providing primary and secondary preventive maintenance care.
  • All inpatients will be admitted as per the local MTF instructions.
  • Ensures compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
  • Ability to recognize adverse signs and symptoms and quickly react in emergency situations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization. Effectively uses appropriate communication format in addressing professional issues.
  • Excellent oral communication skills for patient/family education and telephone triage of patients. Telephone and in-person assessment/evaluation includes the determination of optimal time and location for patient management (ER, clinic, homecare) and follow-up care as required. Prescribes and communicates treatment plans and patient teaching in accordance with established protocols. Collects and assesses significant patient history information and performs all necessary patient teaching.
  • Excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity, including telephone contacts, in accordance with requirements.
  • Participates in the orientation and training of newly assigned personnel, as appropriate.
  • May be required to work various shifts or augment clinical provider support during the absence of other team providers due to illness, leave or deployment.
  • Be capable of adequately diagnosing and treating a wide-range of pediatric and adult acute and chronic diseases and injuries including but not limited to conditions of the:
    o Skin Pulmonary System
    o Head Gastrointestinal System
    o Eyes Musculoskeletal System
    o Ears Genitourinary System
    o Nose Reproductive System
    o Throat Lymphatic System
    o Neck Central Nervous System
    o Cardiovascular System Endocrine System
    o Psychiatric and Behavioral Health
  • Have sufficient experience to be able to adequately perform medical procedures to include, but not limited to, the following:
    o Basic Life Support
    o Advanced Life Support
    o Pediatric Advanced Life Support
    o Secure and maintain an adequate airway to include endotracheal intubation.
    o Cardioversion of life-threatening arrhythmias
    o Simple minor surgical procedures: punch biopsies, excision of skin lesions
    o Simple abscess incision and drainage
    o Nail trephination
    o Sling or swath injuries
    o Suture simple laceration
    o Suture removal
    o Cryotherapy
    o Nebulizer treatment
    o Urine catheterization
    o Cultures (throat, wound)
    o Suprapubic tap
    o Remove ocular, nasal and ear foreign bodies.
    o Clearing of ears by flush technique
    o Reduce simple dislocations and fractures, when appropriate
    o Bandaging of sprains, minor burns, and minor lacerations
    o Perform venous punctures for lab studies and interpret results.
    o Evaluation and interpret arterial blood gases results.
    o Administer intravenous, intramuscular, and subcutaneous medications as appropriate.
    o Stabilize and evaluate cervical spine injuries as appropriate.
    o Splint and stabilize traumatic injuries to extremities.
  • Ensures a safe work environment, employee safe work habits and patient safety IAW regulatory agencies, infection control policies, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Prepare records and reports as required in support of services rendered in accordance with established procedures.
  • Attend and participate in patient care reports, patient care conferences, team conferences, professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities only to the extent that such attendance and participation is relative to his/her assigned cases and/or performance of services as determined by the supervisor.

  • Degree/Education: Must have successfully completed all education and training requirements leading to and graduated from an accredited national, state or military equivalent school (MSN or DNP degree) for Nurse Practitioner (Family and/or Geriatric Specialty)
  • Certifications: The HCW shall hold and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. In addition to certification requirements in CPR, advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Certifications must be through American Heart Association or American Red Cross guidelines. Member must present proof of current certification(s) through American Health Association or American Red Cross. Computer-based training does not constitute fulfilling the training requirements. Must maintain currency at NO cost to the government.
  • Experience: Successful completion of an accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner (Family and/or Geriatric Specialty). Have at least 24 months of experience as a Nurse Practitioner within the last 36 months. Outpatient experience highly preferred though not required.
  • Board Certification: Must hold a Nurse Practitioner certification from either the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
  • Licensure/Registration: Must have and maintain throughout course of contract, a current, active, valid, unrestricted license (with no limitations, stipulations or pending adverse actions) to practice as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) from a US jurisdiction.
