Summary
The City of Newberry Parks and Recreation Department is seeking hardworking, dependable and coachable individuals to join our team. As a Facilities Maintenance Technician, you will play a key role in keeping our City looking its best by performing a wide variety of tasks to ensure our parks, athletic fields, landscaping, buildings and grounds are properly cared for and maintained. Successful candidates will be able to work a flexible schedule that may include nights, weekends, and holidays. The position may be overfilled as a Facilities Maintenance Technician 2 - up to $25/hour.
Role and Responsibilities
This is skilled work in diversified Facilities Maintenance, repair, and construction for all City facilities. Performs a variety of routine semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, and maintenance of City-owned buildings facilities and grounds. Work is performed under the general direction of the Facility Maintenance Supervisor.
Illustrative Tasks
  • Performs proper maintenance and repair of all city-owned buildings and leased facilities including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, Heating Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, carpentry and general maintenance.
  • Advocates building organizational culture through aligning core values including: Teamwork, Respect, Accountability, Innovation, Leadership, and Superior Service.
  • Performs inspections and provides maintenance on playground equipment and play structures.
  • Performs cleaning of equipment and facilities.
  • Performs Custodial and litter/trash control duties.
  • Performs duties associated with security.
  • Mows, trims, edges, fertilizes and waters parks, playing fields and other landscaped areas; weeds, prunes, mulches, fertilizes and sprays trees, plants, and shrubbery; prepares soil for planting, seeds and re-sods lawn area; plants trees, seedlings, and shrubs.
  • Grooms and prepares athletic playing fields and other landscaped areas for scheduled sporting events and public use.
  • Assists in application of fertilizers, pesticides and non-restrictive insecticide and herbicides to athletic fields, lawns, flowers, shrubs and trees.
  • Repairs and maintains irrigation systems; adjusts repairs and replaces timing mechanisms.
  • Performs renovations and retrofits of athletic playing fields.
  • Performs plumbing work in repairing valves and fixtures.
  • Conducts frequent inspections of construction sites.
  • Receives and understands written and verbal instruction. Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment, participates in the maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities and grounds.
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used to perform required projects.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and tools by cleaning and checking after use and reports any defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Performs a variety of routine maintenance; changing light bulbs, light switches, and light sockets, exhaust fans, light plumbing (water leaks, restroom repairs and kitchen repairs), painting, assembly and disassembly of office furniture and moving furniture, replace, and repair sprinkler systems.
  • Operates motorized vehicles and equipment, including pickup truck, saws, pumps, sanders, generators, compactor, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radio, phone and all other related tools and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, patiently and courteously with City employees, and other community members.
  • Performs monthly routine maintenance on the Air Conditioners, changing the filters and cleaning the coils.
  • Provides after-hours support for rental facilities/sporting and special events as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Full time presence on job.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Graduation from high school, or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and read the English language
  • Must have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public
  • A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualification.
  • Required to possess a valid Class B CDL Florida Driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the City Driving Policy and insurance program or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.

Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and tools involving the operation, maintenance, repair and construction of buildings/plumbing/electrical/Irrigation and HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of building codes, fire codes and safety regulations such as local and International building, Electrical, and Plumbing Codes, OSHA, EPA regulations, and ADA requirements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other governmental units, co-workers and the public.
  • Knowledge of the methods and operating rules of various types of equipment, such as bucket trucks/zero turn mowers/backhoes/ dump trucks, including safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of proper athletic field turf maintenance programs.
  • Ability to understand written and visual instructions regarding building code requirements and other industry standards as they relate to facility repairs and maintenance.
  • Skill in reading, and interpreting complicated construction, mechanical, electrical, blueprints, and other related drawings.
  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.

Walking involves frequent change of elevations, grades, slopes, composite surfaces and ability to step through and over items of varied size and shape. Must possess ability to quickly maneuver to avoid injury or prevent further damage to person or equipment from natural occurrences, toppling items and malfunctioning equipment. Frequent use of both arms and hands are required to perform functions that require positioning while fastening of fixtures, furnishings and equipment.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally assist with lifting and/or moving more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold (non-weather); work with explosives, and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
