Job Summary

As a Journeyman, you will be responsible for performing preventive and corrective maintenance tasks, as well as responding to emergency maintenance service requests. Reporting directly to the General Foreman & Facilities Maintenance Manager, you will receive daily work orders from the Maintenance Shop to address maintenance needs and ensure the smooth operation of the power plant efficiently and effectively.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities.

  1. Perform Preventive Maintenance:
  2. Execute routine inspections, lubrications, and adjustments on machinery and equipment according to established schedules and procedures.
  3. Identify potential issues and implement corrective measures to prevent equipment failure and maximize operational efficiency.
  4. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including completed tasks, inspection reports, and maintenance logs.
  5. Conduct Corrective Maintenance:
  6. Respond promptly and effectively to maintenance service requests and work orders received from the Maintenance Shop.
  7. Diagnose equipment malfunctions, identify root causes, and implement appropriate repairs or replacements to restore functionality.
  8. Collaborate with other technicians and tradespeople to ensure complex repairs are addressed efficiently and in a timely manner.
  9. Emergency Maintenance Service:
  10. Act swiftly and decisively in emergency situations, such as equipment breakdowns, power outages, or safety hazards.
  11. Prioritize and respond to emergency maintenance calls, coordinating efforts to minimize downtime and ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.
  12. Provide accurate and timely updates on the status of emergency repairs to the Facilities Maintenance Manager and other relevant stakeholders.


  1. Equipment Troubleshooting and Repair:
  2. Utilize your extensive knowledge and expertise to troubleshoot equipment failures, electrical systems, mechanical components, and control systems.
  3. Perform repairs, replacements, and adjustments on power plant equipment, including boilers, turbines, generators, pumps, motors, and conveyors.
  4. Test equipment functionality after repairs to ensure proper operation and compliance with safety standards and regulations.
  5. Safety and Compliance:
  6. Adhere to all safety protocols, guidelines, and regulatory requirements while performing maintenance tasks.
  7. Promote a safety-first culture and actively participate in safety meetings, training programs, and incident investigations.
  8. Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and contribute to the plant's efforts in minimizing its impact on the environment.

List of common daily tasks:

  1. Welding and Fabrication: Perform welding and fabrication tasks to repair, maintain, and modify equipment and structures within the coal-fired power generation plant.
  2. Preventive Maintenance: Execute preventive maintenance tasks on various plant components, including boilers, turbines, conveyors, piping systems, and other mechanical equipment, ensuring they are in optimal working condition.
  3. Inspection and Testing: Conduct visual inspections, non-destructive testing, and quality checks on welded joints and structural components to ensure compliance with industry standards and specifications.
  4. Equipment Repair: Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, defects, or failures and perform necessary repairs or replacements in a timely and efficient manner.
  5. Blueprint Reading: Interpret and work from technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics to accurately identify welding requirements and specifications for equipment repairs and modifications.
  6. Welding Techniques and Processes: Utilize various welding techniques, such as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), adhering to industry standards and safety protocols. Ability to work in various positions, including overhead, vertical, and horizontal.
  7. Safety Compliance: Adhere to strict safety guidelines and protocols to ensure a safe working environment, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper handling of hazardous materials.
  8. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of performed maintenance activities, including equipment repairs, inspections, welding procedures, and material usage, and provide detailed reports to supervisors or management as required.
  9. Team Collaboration: Collaborate with other maintenance technicians, engineers, and supervisors to coordinate maintenance schedules, share technical expertise, and ensure efficient workflow within the preventive maintenance team.

Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a relevant trade school program is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in multiple welding processes, including SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and FCAW.
  • Ability to work in various positions, including overhead, vertical, and horizontal.
  • Familiarity with welding codes and standards, particularly those relevant to power generation facilities.
  • Knowledge of metallurgical principles and heat control in welding.
  • Valid journeyman license or certification in a relevant trade, such as journeyman, boilermaker, fitter, mechanical, or industrial maintenance; Rigger certification is a plus.
  • Proven experience working in power plants or industrial settings; focus on coal-burning systems is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance techniques for power generating plant equipment.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting industrial, mechanical, and control systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, and diagrams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with team members, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to work in a demanding environment, including confined spaces and elevated heights.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and commitment to adhering to safety protocols.
  • Flexibility to work occasional overtime, weekends, and participate in an on-call rotation as needed.
  • Detail orientation, as the position requires being careful about detail and thorough in completing work tasks.
  • Persistence - Job requires persistence in the face of obstacles.
  • Self-Control - Job requires maintaining composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations.

Physical Requirements / Working Environment

  • Location: This position will primarily be based in Pineville, SC 29468, with occasional visits to Georgetown, SC 29440, and Iva, SC 29655 when necessary for maintenance programs or emergency responses.

While performing the duties of this job, you will:
