Polk County is a small county in the southwestern part of North Carolina and is bordered by South Carolina. It has diverse terrain from flatlands east to foothills and mountains west. The climate is warm most of the year but short-lived snow is not unusual in the winter. The people of Polk County originate from all over the United States and the world. For generations, people have retired in Polk County for the climate, beauty as well as equestrian lifestyle that it offers. Retirees make up a substantial portion of the population, but the county is also home to many local families. Most people commute out of the county to work as Polk is more of a residential and tourist location than one of big business. It has a slow pace of life that is part of its charm.
