The agent in this position will provide leadership for the development, implementation, evaluation, and marketing of an effective educational program in family and consumer sciences, including the areas of foods and nutrition, food preservation techniques such as pressure canning, freezing, and drying, the ServSafe program, health and wellness, and local foods. The agent will also provide nutrition and cooking classes for youth, seniors, and underserved populations. The agent will be responsible for the facilitation of the ‘Visit NC Farms’ app and the Extension Master Food Volunteer program.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension agents deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.
Alamance County is located in north-central North Carolina halfway between (and under an hour from) two larger metro regions – the famed Research Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) to the east and the Piedmont Triad (Greensboro-High Point-Winston-Salem) to the west. The population of 160,000 continues to grow because of Alamance County’s special blend of southern hospitality and charm. This growing area enjoys a flavor of spirited progress, beautiful landscapes, and friendly people. The Alamance County area has many attractions and attributes, from beautiful trails and trips along our river and lakes to enjoying numerous performances and concerts throughout the year as well as our history, shopping, parks, golf courses, and restaurants. The Alamance County Agricultural Industry includes 720 farms on 80,042 acres with an average farm size of 111 acres.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

The agent in this position will provide leadership for the development, implementation, evaluation, and marketing of an effective educational program in family and consumer sciences, including the areas of foods and nutrition, food preservation techniques such as pressure canning, freezing, and drying, the ServSafe program, health and wellness and local foods.   • Deliver research-based educational programs in accordance with the mission of North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

  • Develop a community-based FCS program that meets identified needs and reaches all audiences.

  • Plan, market, deliver, and evaluate educational programs for both adult and youth audiences.

  • Use appropriate delivery methods that enhance learning and skill development. Delivery methods may include workshops, classes, seminars, conferences, media, consultations, technical assistance, field trips, tours, and other methods.

  • Stay up-to-date on current trends and research in assigned subject-matter areas including, but not limited to, nutrition, cooking skills, local food systems and food security, home management, health and well-being, food preservation, and food safety.

  • Conduct all programming in compliance with Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action/Civil Rights policies and procedures.

  • Work collaboratively with other staff, agencies, and community organizations to facilitate a nutrition, food safety, and local foods program focused on equitable access to health, affordable food, food safety, and support for the agricultural community.

  • Determine program needs and impact by assessing and evaluating the FCS program regularly to ensure the needs of the community are being served.

  • Market FCS programs to the community using various media and technologies.

  • Collect appropriate demographic and evaluation data using relevant tools to show a meaningful impact on clientele.

  • Track and maintain program-related paperwork such as data, inventory, and other documentation.

  • Track and spend within the provided budget.

  • Seek grants or other appropriate funding sources, as necessary, to support expanded or innovative programming.

  • Conduct programming in compliance with Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action/Civil Rights policies and procedures.

  • Recruit, train, and supervise Extension Master Food Volunteers to assist with FCS programs.

  • Collaborate with Extension agents in other counties on common educational program initiatives.

  • Work collaboratively with state specialists in the development and implementation of new FCS curricula.

  • Use appropriate technologies to plan and deliver educational programs through workshops, seminars, conferences, media, one-on-one visits, field trips, tours, and other methods through the Alamance County Center and in partnership with various community agencies.

  • Deliver food safety for managers certification training courses (such as Safe Plates) on a semi-regular basis.

  • Deliver home food preservation classes for general community members or interested agencies.

  • Market FCS programs to the community using various media.

  • Manage the marketing and finances related to the Visit NC Farms app in Alamance County. Maintain ongoing communication with assets (farms and businesses) in the app to promote their events/products and to collect payment.

  • Determine program needs and impact by assessing and evaluating the FCS program regularly to ensure community needs are served.

  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers to assist with the implementation of the FCS program.

  • Work collaboratively with other Extension programs, staff, agencies, and community organizations to meet the needs of the FCS programs and the individuals that the programs serve.

  • Travel associated with official duties will be required. This may include attendance at night and/or weekend meetings, out-of-town county events, training opportunities, and conferences. Required to have personal mobility/transportation and obtain/maintain a valid driver’s license and appropriate liability insurance. Must have willingness to work necessary hours to fulfill job responsibilities (some evenings and weekends).

8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday, evenings and weekends as required.

Minimum Experience/Education:

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field (based on a 4.0 scale). The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor’s degree. – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one degree in family and consumer sciences (formerly known as home economics) or a related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The County Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
