OFFICIAL TITLE: Executive Director ofDevelopment & Alumni Relations Development
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Vice President for University Advancement
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Development and Alumni Relations Staff
General Statement of Duties: The Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations is the lead and accountable for all aspects of the fundraising and alumni engagement efforts of University Advancement. The incumbent develops and executes an integrated strategy to engage alumni and major gift prospects and provides oversight of all giving. They develop, establish and set annual fundraising and engagement goals and create/utilize metrics for achieving said goals. They manage, mentor and monitor staff in their work, paying close attention to the staff's progress, daily activities, and potential.
Overall, the Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations is charged with leading WSU's efforts to foster meaningful relationships and secure major gifts, serving as the liaison to various campus-wide and Worcester State University Foundation Board committees, collaborating with colleagues throughout the university to create and maintain financial support that responds to the university's strategic plan and goals. In-state and out-of-state travel, as well as frequent nights and weekends are associated with this position.
Responsibilities:

  1. (E) Develops and implements a comprehensive development plan.
  2. (E) Develops, oversees and manages annual development and alumni budget for review, discussion, and approval by Division's Vice President
  3. Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Development and Alumni Relations Office.
  4. (E) Leads the university's philanthropic, engagement, and advancement efforts, including but not limited to annual giving, planned giving, major gifts, and Alumni Relations.
  5. (E) Manages and oversees the Alumni Association's Advisory Board, including assisting with the identification and implementation of annual priorities and goals and ensuring strong and productive relationships between its members and the academic and administrative leadership.
  6. (E) Manages and oversees development and alumni programs, projects and annual events that support the University's strategic plan as well as the goals of the University and the Division of University Advancement.
  7. (E) Ensures growth of a major gifts program including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors and mentorship of front-line gift officers.
  8. (E) Ensures building of planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequest expectancies.
  9. (E) Directs the development and Alumni Relations team.
  10. (E) Oversees the annual Foundation Golf Tournament utilizing development staff.
  11. (E) Establishes and builds relationships with, and secures gifts from, a wide range of alumni, donors, community members, and WSU faculty and staff.
  12. (E) Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with university leadership, such as the President, Provost, and Deans, as well as faculty chairs and department heads.
  13. (E) Collaborates with the Marketing and Communications on Advancement topics for print and electronic publications highlighting our donors and alumni.
  14. (E) Develops, updates, and oversees all Development Office and Engagement metrics to ensure consistency with the university's and division's priorities, utilizing fundraising standards.
  15. (E) Collaborates with colleagues throughout the University to create and maintain pathways for alumni engagement and donor pipeline development that respond to the University's strategic plan and goals.
  16. (E) Serves as a member of the President's Cabinet as well as a member of various on-campus committees and Worcester State Foundation committees.
  17. (E) Demonstrates civility and professional, customer-service oriented behavior, worthy of emulation by other staff and students.
  18. (E) Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.
  19. (E) Responsible for contributing to Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action objectives.

Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in fundraising and alumni engagement.
  • Demonstrated major gifts closings.
  • Knowledge of and successful experience with fundraising software.
  • Flexibility and initiative, as well as the ability to work independently, combined with skills for thriving in a team environment to achieve goals.
  • Experience with budget management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse stakeholders, including alumni; evidenced success in cultivating and maintaining collaborative relationships.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills including public speaking and persuasive writing.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to make independent decisions while working collaboratively in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to work in a system that emphasizes measurable objectives which include targets for fundraising goals.
  • Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention paid to detail and prioritization given to deadlines.
  • Possess high professional and ethical standards regarding confidential information.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends and evenings, and to travel (in-state and out-of-state).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree.
  • Knowledge of and successful experience with Raiser's Edge fundraising software.

Additional Information:
This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, professional APA position. The firm annual salary range for this position is $130,000- $140,000, commensurate with relevant professional experience and education.
