The South High Foundation, governed by a board of directors consisting of alumni and community volunteers, has served the staff and students at Minneapolis South High since 1983. They have distributed more than $1M in post-secondary educations scholarships to date as well as supported numerous academic and extracurricular programs. The Executive Director works with the board chair and committee chairs to support the mission of the foundation. They manage the day-to-day operations of the foundation along with a part-time administrator. Duties fall into the four strategic pillars chosen by the board: 1) Governance, 2) Finance, 3) Development, and 4) Giving.
Primary responsibilities:
Governance
Work with the board to ensure the foundation is operating smoothly according to by-laws and state guidelines.
Ensure that conflict of interest and other key policies are implemented and up to date.
Steward the organization to continue to grow financially.
Lead strategic planning to fulfill mission and vision.
Attend board meetings. Maintain records, minutes, and other important documents.
Finance
Ensure that donations and payments are processed in a timely matter using QuickBooks and donor database (Civi).
Prepare and review monthly financial reports and coordinate the annual audit and 990.
Prepare monthly financial summary and analysis of financial information for treasurer and board president.
Reconcile checking accounts and PayPal monthly.
Development
Prepare financial information for annual reports and provide information as requested for newsletters.
Assist in framing donation appeal letters, editing, and tracking.
Coordinate preparation and mailing of newsletters and other mailings with direct mail provider[TP1] .
Establish relationships with alumni and community members, stewarding involvement and raising funds.
Giving
Coordinate the internal grants program, working with teachers and administrators.
Support volunteer led programs (i.e., Scholarship Committee, Communications Committee, etc.)
Support the preparation and administration of external grants (scholarships and emergency funds).
Qualifications:
Course work or commensurate experience. Familiarity with QuickBooks or similar accounting software. Two years’ experience working with a nonprofit or foundation. Understanding of MS Word, Excel and Civi (or similar CRM)
The Executive Director will be interested in building relationships with educators, students, alumni, and community volunteers. This person must be well-organized, able to work independently, have highly effective written and verbal communication skills, and be able to follow the directions of the board. The ideal candidate will be pro-active, while also being willing to ask for help. This is an exciting time of transition for the board and an exciting opportunity to help shape the next evolution of the foundation.
