ENCOS is seeking an individual with high integrity and a bachelor’s degree in biology, Natural Resources, Electronics, or associate degree with some college coursework in electronics to fulfill a position with us as an Environmental Systems Technician. Working as an Environmental Systems Technician, it will be your job to test, calibrate, install, inspect, and even repair various environmental data collection systems. You will also be tasked with performing general maintenance on the equipment and even designing and integrating new data collection systems. You will work with a wide variety of equipment which includes calculators, computer software, basic electronic diagnostic equipment, acoustic Doppler current profilers, maintain service and archive calibration and maintenance records. You will maintain an extensive inventory of company owned hydrographic equipment and will be responsible for firmware upgrades. You will also be tasked with collecting field data including water quality, meteorological, hydrographic, and other environmental data at remote locations.
To do well in this role, you will need to have a deep base of knowledge around electronics, computer software, and be able to learn the operation of data logger and their system programming. You should have strong problem-solving skills and be capable of finding the most efficient solution to an issue with minimal guidance.

Essential Duties and Responsibility – may perform other duties as assigned
- Perform technical services including maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, operation and testing of a full range of environmental, hydrographic, meteorological data collection systems.
- Develop and devise improvements and alterations to complex technical equipment, instruments, or software, including modifying and conducting complex tests and analyzing the results.
- Provide support monitoring, operating, and maintaining company computer systems.
- Serve as the technical focal point for maintenance on systems and equipment for assigned local and remote areas (data collection platforms).
- Instrument maintenance and repair.
- Install and make test runs of new equipment based on manufacturer specifications; accurately record all service and repair activities and maintain service and repairs logs for assigned systems/equipment.
- Fabrication of mounts and enclosures to deploy instruments and associated components for long term data collection projects.
- Typical tasks: consults with senior or supervising technicians, and with equipment vendors regarding preventive maintenance, component replacements, or repair needs, techniques, and schedules; consult with senior technicians regarding component fabrications to clarify directions, blueprints, or specifications data; consult with senior technicians and researchers regarding equipment adjustments, calibrations, or component accessing procedures on company owned or client serviced equipment.
- Maintain the parts stock used in the maintenance and repair of equipment; maintains and keeps current technical library resources including equipment specifications, maintenance and repairs materials, vendor equipment advisories, technical journals, and related materials for easy access; may order and/or purchase standard parts needed through central purchasing office or directly through vendors.
- Reassemble instruments and replace instruments in system using hand tools.
- Support the specification and development of new data systems.
- Act as a technical resource by training and mentoring other technicians/scientists.
- Work in a team environment to help solve data collection systems and procedures.
- Actively develop improvements in standard practices to ensure quality and efficiency.
- Collect, process, and archive streamflow, and precipitation data, sometimes in adverse conditions.
- Operate and maintain streamflow gauges, surface water level sensors, and precipitation monitoring stations, including electronic recorders, and sensors.
- Construct and maintain data collection field structures in remote locations.
- Analyze and verify collected data using automated computer systems.
- Compile, quality assure, and archive data into computer databases.
- Operate a company vehicle.
- Operate and/or maintain motorized watercraft.
- Diagnose, repair, install, assemble, and maintain electronics components and systems
- Draft user manuals to explain electronics systems and devices to laypeople
- Attending regular workshops and training sessions to maintain your mastery of electronics
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
- Ability to read and write English and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Basic knowledge of commonly used hand tools.
- Ability to perform all the duties of the classification.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a work group/team.
- Strong problem-solving abilities.
- You will need to have a good, strong background in mathematics, problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership skills.
- Physically fit and able to lift 60 pounds.
Required Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, natural resources, electronics, or associate degree with some college coursework in electronics

Work setting
Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments with potential exposure to conditions which may include fumes, extreme heat and cold, wetness, loud noise, dust, inclement weather, and hazardous chemicals. Most field work requires travel to work sites with exposure to seasonal weather conditions. Field conditions may include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow; hazardous conditions such as ice or flooding; or exposure to irritant or toxic chemicals. Work may require the use of personal protective equipment such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, respirators, or life jackets.
