Position Summary
The EHS intern will gain exposure to the development and implementation elements of our overall safety and/or environmental management systems. Key components of this position include utilizing Viterra's Safety System (Intelex) to help manage and report safety incidents, EHS compliance inspections, training requirements, preventive maintenance, system administration and dashboards to communicate key EHS metrics to Viterra facilities. The information from this system helps the department develop and improve safety programs, identify trends, root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to improve EHS performance. Interaction with all levels of employees from production workers to top location and business leadership will occur within a 'mentorship' framework.
Position Responsibilities
- Assist in establishing and monitoring safe working conditions for our most valuable assets - our people.
- Assist EHS Department to implement and update various safety programs across Viterra Facilities. This includes the development and improvement of safety programs, job hazard analysis procedures, and training.
- Visit Viterra facilities with EHS mentors to gain a better understanding of grain operations. (Travel will likely be a component of this internship to work with each of Viterra's regional safety managers)
- During site visits, the EHS Intern may be involved with safety meetings, corporate assessments, inspections, training, and coaching of Viterra employees.
- Foster a culture of safe behavior and environmental compliance at all times. Part of Viterra Safety culture is encouraging and coaching employees to report near misses and incidents. Our goal is to identify and report safety hazards which could result in a serious incident or fatality (SIF) and then implement safety controls to prevent future reoccurrence across the organization.
- Provide corrective action recommendation and assist in implementing metrics for tracking and reporting on EHS performance issues when needed.
- Gain an understanding of other legal and compliance requirements.
- Demonstrate regular attendance and timeliness in reporting to work, meetings and completing assignments as assigned.
Qualifications
- Working towards a BS degree from an accredited program in engineering, ergonomics/human factors, occupational safety, environmental sciences, fire safety, safety, or related field.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and personal relationship/coaching skills.
- Excellent communications, computer skills.
- Must be a professional, self-motivated individual with desire to learn new skills and grow as an individual.
- A high degree of initiative and resourcefulness in completing work with limited mentorship.
- Able to function in fast paced environment.
- Able to travel regionally as the position requires
