Job purpose
The Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist (EHSS) will review, evaluate, and analyze work environments and design programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, and biological agents, or ergonomic factors. May conduct inspections and enforce laws to regulate and govern the Health and Safety of individuals.
Duties and responsibilities
· Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local environmental, health, and Safety regulations.
· Responsible for safety/environmental reports required by regulatory agencies.
· Provides support and ensures consistency in interpretation and implementation of EHS policies, practices, and procedures.
· Keeps corporate safety and local management informed of safety, Health and environmental issues and progress toward accomplishing safety goals and objectives.
· Participates in addressing accidents, incidents and near misses through timely fact-finding investigation, determination of root cause, and implement corrective and preventative actions.
· Conduct new hire orientation, and train to applicable OSHA and EPA standards (i.e., forklift, lockout/tagout, HAZCOM, SWPPP, SPCC, etc.).
· Conduct monthly safety committee and employee focus meetings. Document meeting minutes and conduct follow-up on action items through completion.
· Maintain the chemical inventory and conduct reviews of safety data sheets for newly proposed chemicals.
· Conduct safety audits of the work area and provide feedback to area management on opportunities noted during the audit process.
· Develops and implements a proactive safety plan for injury and near miss reduction. Coordinate with Corporate EHS for planning and implementation guidance.
· Conduct environmental audits for Storm Water Pollution Prevention (SWPPP), Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC), Hazardous and Non-Hazardous Waste.
Participate in safety and environmental initiatives that will contribute to the success of the company’s EHS programs.
Qualifications
· Associate degree or higher (preferred).
· 2+ years’ experience (preferred).
· Work location – Conneaut, Ohio (on-site)
· Good computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PPT, etc.).
· 8-hour shift with flexibility to cover other shifts for training, investigation, auditing, etc.
· Travel as required (minimal).
· Good written and verbal communication skills
· Candidate must be motivated and self-driven to continuously improve the EHS programs and activities at the plant.
Working conditions and environment
Office setting with extensive exposure to foundry / manufacturing environment with exposure to high noise, heat, hazards of moving equipment, and molten metal. Must use protective equipment to protect eyes, feet, ears, and potential burn areas.
Normal equipment used
Computers, Fax, Printer, Telephone, basic office essentials. Routine exposure and occasional use of plant manufacturing equipment, forklift and basic maintenance tools.
