Job Description
The City of Altoona has a full-time Engineering Technician career opportunity. The Engineering Technician performs routine engineering work on City infrastructure and Public Works projects and programs. The Technician offers assistance to other members of the Engineering Department in the application of engineering principles, methods and techniques, as required for municipal operations.
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
-Assists in plan preparation for the purpose of construction projects, as-built records, inspections and other assigned projects.
-Consults with supervisory personnel in regards to plan preparation, evaluation of existing field conditions, design changes, and reports.
-Assists in the survey of project sites to obtain and analyze topographical details of sites.
-Researches records, maps and other data to obtain typical engineering information.
-Makes field notes to document quantities and calculates alignment, grade, locations, etc. for plan preparation or interpretation.
-Drafts detailed dimensional drawings typical of Public Works projects.
-Assists in the preparation of engineering plans, specifications and projects.
-Prepares storm sewer, storm drainage, street system maps, databases, site plans.
-Assists in the maintenance of engineering and infrastructure records.
-Prepares and drafts as-built plans for street, water, sewer or light systems.
-Collects and distributes information for City assets using a computer, tablet, GPS, and GIS equipment.
-May serve as a drafter by making site plans, drawing cross sections, profiles, and construction details. Will check dimensions of parts or materials to be used and make adjustments or changes necessary or desired; while using Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) equipment and software.
-Assists in traffic control studies pertaining to speed limits, passing areas, site investigations, signalization, signing, or similar studies.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of related technical or college training in drafting, Computer-Aided-Design (CAD), engineering technology, civil engineering or a closely related field; and
- Minimum of two (2) years related experience; or
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience
- Relevant department certifications
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices and applicable City policies, laws and regulations affecting methods as applicable to a municipal setting; some knowledge of Division activities; knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry; working knowledge of flood plains and storm water and erosion/sedimentation control;
- Considerable skill in arriving at cost estimates on complex projects; skill in operating the listed tools and equipment; some skill in basic drafting, surveying and utilizing Computer-Aided-Design software;
- Ability to apply the principles of engineering technology to specific problems; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with employees, contractors, construction workers, other governmental agency representatives, City officials, and the general public; ability to read and interpret the assigned types of civil engineering plans, maps and specifications; ability to perceive mechanical, physical and spatial relationships.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid State driver's license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment;
- Must pass a written examination.
