Job Summary
The Engineering Intern receives training and completes a variety of assignments in staff activities directly related to his or her course of study or future career goals. This position is designed as a practical learning opportunity that also addresses a City need, and training and staff support will be provided as such. The Engineering Intern will serve in the position for a period of four weeks to three months, depending on the Intern's availability and City requirements. The Intern will be assigned an internship project and set of tasks which complement their academic work.
This position will be assigned to the Public Works department, primarily focused on the updating, data management, and design/management of small capital and non-capital City projects. The Engineering Intern will work directly with the Engineering team to perform right-of-way and drainage permit review and assist in development review and inspection. At the culmination of the internship period, he or she will have gained practical experience in drafting, updating, and managing GIS data sets, issuing permits (with oversight) and direct assistance with small capital improvement projects. Before completing the Internship program, the Engineering Intern will summarize and present his or her learning experience to the City Engineer and Public Works Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Engineering Intern will be primarily focused on completing his or her internship project as outlined in their supervisor's internship proposal. Duties may include the following:

• Updating records drawings and standards/codes;
• Updating and managing GIS data sets including but not limited to: sewer assets, water assets, storm structures and signage;
• Issuing right-of-way and drainage permits (with oversight);
• Small capital improvement projects as directed by City Engineer;
• Use of various computer hardware and software products in the performance of assignments and job duties;
• Administrative support for Engineering Team and Public Works Department;
• Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of principles and use of CAD technical software
• Skill in using PDF editing software, such as Adobe Pro
• Skill in conducting interpersonal interactions in a tactful, patient, and respectful manner
• Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively, verbally and in writing, with attention to detail to grammar, punctuation, etc. for finished written products
• Ability to establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships with co-workers, applicants, managers, and elected officials
• Ability to demonstrate commitment to the City's values
• Ability to follow office practices, processes, procedures, and business etiquette as defined by the organization's culture
• Ability to use a personal computer, related software programs and web-based applications

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent and enrollment or planned enrollment in higher education, training or other course of study in a related field.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is primarily performed indoors in an office setting, as well as at events and meetings throughout the community. Some evening and/or weekend work for meetings and presentations may be required. The employee may be required to sit at a work station for extended periods of time, frequently using a computer and/or the phone. This individual must have the ability to hear at a normal level; verbally communicate in person and by telephone; stand, walk, and drive as needed throughout day; and occasionally lift and carry parcels weighing up 25 pounds.
